What makes this one special? I’m glad you asked. Almost every page highlights one or more verses and offers an explanation. In a regular study bible, these notes would probably be at the bottom of the page, but here they are in the margins, and stand out, so your junior scholar can read them and get a better appreciation for the customs and culture of Bible times. Sometimes, as in an adult study bible, some of the linguistic nuances are explained.
Additionally there are pictures, tables, and maps throughout, (cover material indicates ‘over 700 images’) that help to explain the context of a particular passage. Although I’m MUCH older than the 8-12 years old group, I enjoyed looking at the pictures and reading the notes.
I was so glad to see that the illustrations weren’t what one usually sees in a kids’ Bible; in this version, with the complete text instead of stories, excerpts, and paraphrases, the illustrations match a level of maturity that the 12 year old will enjoy (they’re not treating me like a kid anymore) but still at a basic enough level for the 8 year old to enjoy.
Sure to become a favorite for the young ones in your family, and I can envision a 9 or 10 year old not only reading this bible, but looking forward to reading it aloud to younger siblings or cousins.
This has all the potential to become THE preferred Bible for Sunday school classes because the teacher has handy access to the supplemental information needed to help prepare a lesson (and encourage further study) and the students will delight in the graphics and explanations.
I received a copy of this Bible from Handlebar Central (and Zondervan) in exchange for the review.
The layout with visuals spaced through the Bible and the feel is definitely not that of a picture book. This is a study Bible and these are study aids intended to enhance the educational experience of studying the Word of God.
I especially like how the side bars (every page) have a reference particular to that page and an explanation of something specific from that referenced verse.
Study Bibles often have "footnotes" that are exlanatory and linked to specific passages. They also provide additional references to the same topic. In the Kid' Visual Study Bible the "footnotes" are essentially the notes in the sidebars.
At the beginning of the books, pertinent information relating to authorship, purpose of the book's being written, for whom it was written, and important teachings in the book (these are specifically referenced with book/chapter/verse).
Indexing is always essential in a study tool and the NIV Kids' Visual Study Bible has an Infographic Index and a Maps Index (small maps throughout the Bible). There is also a collection of maps at the back of the Bible and a Table of Weights and Measures.
DISCLOSURE: I was provided a complimentary copy on behalf of the publisher, Zondervan, to facilitate this review. Opinions are my own and are freely given.
It's the standard NIV version of the Bible with various study notes throughout. The colors and images are visually appealing, but beyond that the images also make some of the things happening in scripture much easier to understand. For instance, this passage from Second Kings does a great job of explaining the difference between how the divided kingdoms kings played out for the people (see image)
If you have a young person or if you yourself are a visual learner, this Bible is worth picking up and adding to your personal study time. I guess that's what I really like about it is that at its heart, it is a study Bible to help give kids and adults a greater understanding of scripture. But it doesn't over explain what's happening, just enough to give clarity and then allow you to come to the lessons conclusion on your own. Visually appealing, theologically sound, and perfect for the kids in your life.
A copy of this Bible was given to me through Handlebar Publishing for the purpose of review. I'm never required to give positive reviews but I'm always happy when I can.
