Learn How to Design Effective Visualization Systems

Visualization Analysis and Design provides a systematic, comprehensive framework for thinking about visualization in terms of principles and design choices. The book features a unified approach encompassing information visualization techniques for abstract data, scientific visualization techniques for spatial data, and visual analytics techniques for interweaving data transformation and analysis with interactive visual exploration. It emphasizes the careful validation of effectiveness and the consideration of function before form.

The book breaks down visualization design according to three questions: what data users need to see, why users need to carry out their tasks, and how the visual representations proposed can be constructed and manipulated. It walks readers through the use of space and color to visually encode data in a view, the trade-offs between changing a single view and using multiple linked views, and the ways to reduce the amount of data shown in each view. The book concludes with six case studies analyzed in detail with the full framework.

The book is suitable for a broad set of readers, from beginners to more experienced visualization designers. It does not assume any previous experience in programming, mathematics, human–computer interaction, or graphic design and can be used in an introductory visualization course at the graduate or undergraduate level.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Visualization is a young field with only a few primary texts available. What distinguishes this one is the way it synthesizes past work to develop a comprehensive framework for design and analysis. … The author builds a framework for understanding the key elements of visualization and develops a synthesis of current best practices. … The book is filled with examples from the universe of visualization. Virtually all the possibilities for visualization design are illustrated with specific examples. … This is an attractive book, one that’s likely to be a fundamental source for the field. It’s worth a look for anyone with even a passing interest."
MAA Reviews, March 2015

"Munzner’s Visualization Analysis and Design is the first comprehensive textbook covering the topic of information visualization. She covers basic theory, careful analysis of the design space, design methodology, and numerous practical examples. Her taxonomic approach is ideally suited for use in the classroom to guide students through the many design decisions associated with creating effective visualizations."
―Chris North, Virginia Tech

"Visualization Analysis and Design does a fantastic job in providing a framework and language for analyzing, critiquing, and discussing visualizations. This book provides a wonderful foundation for the field."
―Miriah Meyer, University of Utah

"Visualization Analysis and Design is a book that fills the gaps in the existing literature. It offers a synthesized view and a framework most useful to guide the newcomer to visualization. The nested model that unifies design and evaluation is particularly enlightening. The book is truly valuable for an initial InfoVis course at the graduate level."

Not the easiest read, but very valuable. Breaks down the visualization tradecraft down to the fundamentals. Explains what elements to use, when to use them, and why. Cites numerous interesting research papers for further reading. This book will give you a strong academic background in Data Visualization; pairs well with books that teach you how to use specific tools such as Tableau or PowerBI.

Of many visualization books I've read through, this one is my favorite for teaching and research briefs. Very good visualization book for practical design and research. I like the focus on data and analysis tasks to drive visual design. Pair this with Tufte's Visual Display of Quantitative Information, and you're set to help newcomers understand visualization in the modern age of visual analytics.

I appreciate the fact that the author so carefully considered and developed a conceptual framework for visualization. I can even appreciate how enthusiastic experts in visualization would be about the content that so wonderfully synthesizes the material. The essential problem is that the author takes a fun, interesting topic and makes it dense, difficult, and boring to get through for people that don't have previous background in the topic. Verbose theoretical framework descriptions and written examples are not a substitute for actual pictures. I would think a textbook about visualization would actually have - well - more visualizations. Some of the examples that do exist are ridiculously complicated such as those in chapter 3. Compare this to "Show Me The Numbers". That book is big and thick and intimidating until you start reading it and the approachable content and liberal examples that make it a breeze to get through. This is a much smaller book but it's painful to read for the intended audience that is trying to understand the concepts being communicated for the first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Summary of Field
Reviewed in Canada on June 26, 2017
Munzner creates an excellent summary of all the important literature in the field, synthesizing it into frameworks that are relevant and extremely useful in designing visualization. Munzner provides a good solid number of examples of different approaches to visualizing data given a certain type and task, as well as how they break down into the respective frameworks.

With each chapter, she drawn on a LOT of literature from the field to outline best practices concerning each possible aspect of visualization.

There is little in the way of concrete code or instructions on how to create this in a visualization tool or environment. This is both a positive and negative. Many other books in the field focus heavily on a specific toolset and is thereby limited by the design options they provide, which this book avoids. However, I found the book's described methodology leading me to design choices that I think are correct for the task, but difficult or impossible to visualize with the technological tools I have available. Though, this was hardly a huge issue.

I found the one down side to be that while Munzner adequately describes how to break down data and task into abstractions, there is little in the way of direction of how to connect those to the visualization you are trying to design. It was only over trying to use this multiple times before we started to see why it was useful to break it down those ways. Overall though, this is a very useful and systematic way of building visualizations and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to create effective ones.
