This textbook describes techniques for scalar, vector, and tensor field visualization, as well as texture-map based and modeling techniques. The book includes such important algorithms as color mapping, marching cubes, vector warping and coloring, polygon decimation and smoothing, streamline generation, modeling with implicit surfaces, boolean textures, hyperstreamlines, Delaunay triangulation, volume rendering and many more. Extensive descriptions of data structures and API's, and a succinct description of computer graphics for visualization are also covered. Each chapter contains complete references and exercises (the book is used in many college-level visualization and graphics courses), and algorithms are demonstrated using working VTK code (updated for VTK version 5 and published by Kitware).

About the Author

WILLIAM J. SCHROEDER is co-founder of Kitware, Inc. a small business providing commercial solutions based on VTK. Dr. Schroeder's research contributions include polygonal decimation, swept surface generation, stream polygons, and visualization system design.

KENNETH M. MARTIN is co-founder of Kitware, Inc. Ken has extensive practical knowledge of Java, VRML, Tcl/Tk, C/C++ and object-oriented design. Dr. Martin's technical contributions include algorithms in computer vision and imaging, vector field visualization, and computer learning.

WILLIAM E. LORENSEN is a graphics engineer at General Electric Global Research Center. Bill is best known for the marching cubes isosurfacing algorithnm, and has contributed numerous techniques to the graphics field including boolean textures, dividing cubes, and medical segmentation algorithms. Bill is also co-author of the best-selling text Object-Oriented Modeling and Design. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Great for helping with VTK 5.0 and visualization in general

This is the recently updated version of this classic book on visualization that has some people confused due to its name. Because it is named "Visualization Toolkit" you might believe it to be a tutorial on VTK 5.0. This is not the case. This version is updated to take advantage of VTK 5.0's capabilities, but it also functions as a very accessible textbook on all kinds of visualization algorithms and their implementation using VTK. In my opinion it is better than textbooks on the subject of information visualization because of its practical stance and number of examples. The table of contents is as follows:

1. Introduction
2. Object-Oriented Design
3. Computer Graphics Primer
4. Visualization Pipeline
5. Basic Data Representation
6. Fundamental Algorithms
7. Advanced Computer Graphics
8. Advanced Data Representation
9. Advanced Algorithms
10. Image Processing
11. Visualization on the Web
12. Applications

The sections on object-orientation and basic computer graphics are somewhat abbreviated, so you should already know this material before reading this book and use these sections just as reference and as a refresher. The chapters devoted to algorithms and to visualization are the best chapters. There are programming exercises at the conclusion of each chapter to give you some practice using VTK. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the algorithms of visualization and their implementation using VTK 5.0.

Lots of theory

I was disappointed with this book. I'll be honest and say that my intentions were to learn VTK. But I knew going into this book that I would not be learning specifically VTK, rather how to visualize data.
That said, this book seriously lacked in examples. I had hoped to at least gain a basic understanding of VTK from it via examples, but alas, nothing. The book is almost straight theory. While I understand the intentions of this book are not to teach VTK, I don't see you how you can teach Visualization without at least giving the reader some examples, examples which I wrongly assumed would be in VTK.

The theory is all good, but as a reader this book gave me no indication of how to implement any of it.

I bought this one because I plan to use VTK for our company's projects. Now I believe I did a right choice because of the quality of the book. It covers a lot of things that are necessary for 3D visualization. But sometimes it can successfully include a few of topics in detail. So it is not just a collection of related technologies. References are also appropriate. I really like the book!

The right book for scientific visualization beginners

This is the right book if you are begining with Scientific Visualization. The depth of the contents is appropriate. There are many examples using VTK, which illustrate the various topics presented across the book. This Edition is by far more complete and colorful than the last one. It's a MUST HAVE!!!
