We have a pair of fairly muscular and very active Siberians. For health reasons, we've never fed them Friskas or other empty carb food, choosing protein and fat over filler grains; wet food or raw over dry. They've never had a weight problem and are reasonably good eaters, except for being so stinking fussy! Today's pheasant becomes tomorrow's peasant - yet something else to turn our exquisite little noses up at. Consequently we're always looking for new and interesting food choices.
Maybe it's the forest cat in them, but they've always preferred the exotic and expensive. Why eat chicken when they could eat duck, salmon, venison or - their very VERY favorite - bunny! The main problem being that bunny can be hard to come by and raw is a pain in the butt while travelling. They've never really liked dehydrated or freeze dried food except for Cat-Man-Doo's dehydrated salmon - for years the only snack they would deign to touch. Then we found Vital Essentials' freeze dried bunny treats, which apparently taste delicious *and* skitter when thrown across a tile floor. (Prey that both skitters and can be eaten is one of our favorite things.)
But as much as they love it, you're not supposed to just feed them treats. Which is why I was thrilled when they came out with the mini nibs in bunny flavor. It's not cheap, but it is lightweight, easy to carry, and delicious.
In truth, I doubt we'd ever feed them just this, but it's nice that we can. It has good fat, organ meat and plenty of protein. Unlike most freeze-dried or dehydrated food, it's crunchy and a little hard. My cats seem to like it that way and prefer me not to rehydrate it. In truth, we're now feeding them Vital Essentials frozen bunny patties (which they adore) on a regular basis, but still bring these along as a (much) easier treat or meal if we take them out for the day. (Or just throw them a handful to pounce on when we're cooking dinner and want them out of the kitchen.) They do get tired of it if we give it to them too often (just like everything else) but it has become a pantry staple for my very picky eaters.
