This actually the same with my backyard chickens. In the summer, my hens eat plenty of grass and alfalfa and bugs--their eggs are sublime. Come the the winter, the grass are practically non-existent in midwest and I have to force them to eat alfalfa pellets (they're not a fan of dried hay) and plus mealworm if I want to have the same quality eggs. These alfresco eggs are convenience to have if you don't have own hens in your backyard. Nom nom!
My eggs, which were in a cardboard carton about the thickness of an index card, arrived smashed.
Now, one egg, two eggs, ok, I chalk that up to fate. Seven out of a dozen? Really? And that's been a complaint of the packaging throughout many reviews. The plastic cartons were too thin, and these cartons are too thin. For five and a half bucks a carton, you would think they could afford to get the thick carboard cartons the cheaper grocery store eggs use -- and for me that's under three dollars a carton.
So, annoyance about 58% of my purchase being destroyed aside -- do they taste better?
Nope. They taste like eggs.
Are the yolks orange rather than pale yellow?
Yup. But they're brown eggs. Brown eggs from the grocery store also have this orange color.
Am I buying these again? No. I can't justify the price for eggs that taste the same but are so poorly packed that more than half your purchase goes into the trash. And yes, as someone else pointed out in their review -- the shell is much thinner than I am used to.
If your moral compass tells you to buy these because they are less cruel, or because what they eat is healthier for you and your family, then absolutely, buy them. For me, I much prefer to actually get what I pay for -- and other eggs I buy from Fresh actually arrive unbroken and at a lower price.
Also, I stumbled upon some videos saying chickens for laying eggs are not treated with proper food to save the cost. They basically eat garbage because no one is eating their meat. So other than tasting great, pasture-raised chicken sounds more humanely treated.
My only complaint, which is on Fresh, is figuring out a better way to ship the eggs. 1 out of 3 cartons we buy, one or more eggs are broken.
