As a frequent writer and published author, I know the hard work that good writing requires and I'm told that it takes orders of magnitude more work to produce great writing. That's what makes it particularly appalling that Levoy makes it look so effortless. When I began to read the book I started to underline great phrases, visual metaphors that leapt off the page and strings of words that didn't belong together but Levoy's touch made them seem natural pals. After reading only a couple of chapters I realized how useful it wasn't to underline an entire book. Really, it's that good.
Get this book and read it to put the life back into your life. If that isn't a compelling reason, get it just to enjoy the astonishingly good writing.
It is obvious Gregg has undergone an immense healing journey, which he so generously and humbly shares with an unusual level of candor and vulnerability.
As a life and wellness coach, I frequently recommend Gregg’s other book, "Callings," to my clients in transition. It is one of the best guides to help with the inner search for purpose and authenticity.
"Vital Signs" goes several steps further and teaches us how to LIVE bravely and passionately, pushing us beyond past conditioning and present circumstance focus. Caution: this is not a summer beach read. Rather, it is a gem to absorb slowly, with time to ponder the many, many, significant passages so eloquently written. You just may be jolted into a life grander than you ever imagined, or at least make choices of living with no regrets. Bravo, Gregg. You walk your talk!
"Vital Signs" was long- awaited and on a subject even broader but no less enticing- passion. I must say it was not easy for me to get through the 465 pages, it is not "easy-reading" for those who embrace "Reader's Digest' kind of stuff...but who says all reading is about that? "Vital Signs" is not a book, it's an encyclopedia about "passion", in an age where attention deficit rages, people hardly remember what an encyclopedia was and if it ain't immediate it just ain't so! That is exactly what I loved about this book, it really gives you the feeling that the author researched and dived deeply into the subject and has come back to us to tell us what he found.
The big difference between this and "Callings" is that this time Levoy brings himself into the equation, gone are the "I am only a reporter/academic researcher" hat and welcome "I am working through this stuff just like you are!" It makes a big difference and you know that as you move through book the encyclopedia turns personal and then again you have a view from the top to see where the passion has gone and what to do about it.
If you are reading this review you are pretty darn interesting in nurturing and sustaining your passion in life, do do not hesitate, this book is what you are going to need, no matter where you go with it before or after.
There are many ways to walk the path, and Gregg Levoy has explored these different ways. His rich, evocative and deeply curious interviews and anecdotes of others who have learned to live in passion, and his own keen understand, make this book a rich compilation indeed.
It shows not just one marker, but many... if you are stuck, start reading the book... at the beginning, in the middle, in the end. You'll soon see what others who've cracked the code have done, and you'll catch the spark for your own vital life.
Superb writing, research and insight!
