The short version?
If you have an older model that still works, there really is no need to spend the money to upgrade. There are slight differences between the two, but each gives you the same results. If you've never had a Vitamix and are tempted, you would not go wrong with this model.
THE MINOR DIFFERENCES:
5000: Nothing happens when you plug it in.
6300: When you plug it in, a blue light comes on (see photos).
5000: The lid is a bit hard to get on.
6300: The lid style changed and it's much easier to get on/off.
5000: The container has a simple plastic handle.
6300: The container style has changed and it has a more molded hand grip (see photos) which makes it easier to handle.
5000: There are two toggle switches--one to switch from variable to high speed and one to turn the machine on/off.
6300: There are two toggle switches--one for pulse and one to start/stop the machine (the machine is ON when you plug it in).
5000: When making a smoothie (juice, yogurt, protein powder, frozen whole strawberries), I just use high speed and it works fine.
6300: When making a smoothie, there's a smoothie setting. It wasn't as powerful as the high speed setting on the 5000 but it did get it mixed it just took a bit longer.
Overall, it's a great machine. That said, I personally don't see the need for the specific settings (smoothie, frozen desserts, soup) but they don't hurt anything. I've also never had a need for the pulse setting, but now that I have it, I will try it.
Anyhoo - this 5200 Vitamix Blender is a step up from the previous 4000 series I have. It is more powerful, quieter and OH SO COOL.
Now the comparisons:
Vitamix v. Ninja - Ninja is a kick-butt blender for the price - $110 at Costco on sale - and they do have the single serving thing going on that I have always thought that Vitamix should INCLUDE in their blender offering (they do have that now - but it is an add on). BUT - the Ninja is NO VITAMIX. The true test - peanut butter. No comparison. 90 seconds to smooth, consistent AMAZING peanutbutter in the 5200. 5 minutes PLUS (scared of burning it out) with the Ninja and still not where it was with Vitamix!
Vitamix v. Bullet - not even a competition. I killed my first two bullets grinding up fancy cheese for the kids mac and cheese. The bullet is great for simple sauces - that just need a quick whirl - EVEN the 900 Watt NUTRIBULLET - come on people - there is ZERO comparison - Vitamix - hands down.
Finally Blendtec - the blender of the cool, mod hipster v. Vitamix. First of all - pick up a blendtec and then bust your bicep lifting the Vitamix. The difference is Hyundi v Mercedes. "BUT the Hyundi has back seat warmers", you cry. AND? Is there really any comparison between Hyundi and Mercedes (really??)? That is all I am going to say about that. If you want to do the raw food thing - go see what they are using up the Northern California Coast - HOT RAW CHEFS - oh, it's ONLY Vitamix??? Yes. It. Is.
In conclusion - do not be afraid of the reconditioned blender. Register it and you have five years to try to kill it. You will not be able to (did I say my 1970's blenders were in perfect working order?) This company ROCKS and stands by its products. Register and a phone call - gets you EVERYWHERE with Vitamix. Awesome company (American Made!!!)
In this package you will get the BIG wet blender jar, the base motor unit, the tamp, the DVD and a killer "getting started" booklet. Vitamix website has all the recipes you will ever need. You may at some point want to add a small blender jar and the dry blender jar for grinding flour. But you can live your entire life happily with what comes with this in the box - the add-ons are just my crazy suggestions.
One last word here - GO SEE the masters of the Vitamix in person - they are at Costco- call your local store to see when the demo people will be there. That is where I learned about how to cut fruit - seriously - these guys are WARRIORS of the Vitamix. And then come home and buy your refurbished unit on Amazon. Remember - most of these units just did an hour or two at a Trade Show - they are brand spanking new - mine looks beautiful - gleaming black and pristine blender jar and tamp. The recipe booklet and DVD are totally sealed. Brand new as far as I am concerned.
Leave your questions below in the comments.. Please do not defend your blendtecs - I will laugh - all other Vitamix questions will be answered.
