To keep a long story short our two year old son had to have a procedure done to the bottom of his stomach. It was constricted and he could only eat liquid foods. This puts a parent is a mode to find anything to help his kid. We started researching green smoothies which lead us to what product would give us the best results. It came down to Vitamix and Blendtech. We went with the product that gave the 7 year warranty. Now as we fast forward a couple of years our son has recovered from his procedure and can now it solid food. The funny thing is he still prefers his green smoothie to much of anything else. We load it up with Kale, frozen fruit, banana, nuts and coconut oil. This kid has to be one of the healthiest around. We now have two sons and have started the youngest on this drink. He now asks for it as well. Praise God.

As the title says we use this a couple of times a day for about 4 years now and started wearing out the drive component and the variable speed adjustment. We called Vitamix and had a wonderful experience. They gave us an Return Authorization, we sent it to them and had it back within a week. This thing works like it is brand new. On a side note we had to borrow my mothers because it is so ingrained in our everyday nutrition. This is a wonderful product with a company that stands behind it. This combination is quite unique now a days. Two thumbs up.

Instead of parroting what you've probably already gleaned, I'll focus on why/how I use this as a juicer; pricing; organics & Blendtec options. Although I'm a big fan, I try to be discerning & will includes some 'peeves' below.

JUICING
Aside from making nut butters, ice creams, hot/cold soups, flours & smoothies, the 5200 does a decent job juicing. If you use a base of watery veggies like cucumber or celery and blend half of the pitcher first, they will create enough liquid such that you needn't add much water. To give you an idea, I blended a full pitcher of only kale, adding only 1 1/2c of water. Once strained, the end result was 6 cups of liquid, 4 1/2 of which was pure kale juice. This will vary depending on the vegetables. So, if you're on the fence as to whether you'll get a juicer or a blender but can't afford both, go w/ Vitamix because you can do both.

Once blended, strain the smoothie through a 'nut milk bag' ($9) or an old pillow case/tee-shirt, if you're really pressed for cash; just squeeze it into a large bowl. An Omega or a Breville juicer might be more ideal, but chances are you'll have a lot more to clean, take up more space & be out an additional $150+. So, if you're concerned with cost, space or ease of cleaning, the 5200 is a good alternative for juicing.

"Isn't fiber good for you? What's the point of juicing?" Although fiber is good for you, the air & fiber in smoothies is quite filling. I can only drink so much at a time. By juicing, I can ingest a greater concentration of minerals & enzymes, instead of so much air & fiber. If you have digestive issues, juicing is a sure way to make sure those nutrients get into your system. I do prefer smoothies for fruits as that fiber regulates the absorption of sugars. Whenever I saw these blenders being demonstrated in the stores I would stop and listen to the pitch. For over ten years I'd walk away thinking, "Great product, but there's no way I'm spending $400 to $500 on a darn blender."

I make 'everything-but-the-kitchen-sink veggie/fruit smoothies' every morning. After going through about three $50 blenders, each lasting less than a year, I decided to take the plunge. I saw this blender at Costco for around $370, so I did the math. 7 year warranty, 7 cheap blenders at $50 each=$350. O.K., what the heck. What a great decision. I've own it for a year now, and still runs great. Easy to clean. And believe me, there is a significant difference in a smoothie made with one of these and one made with a $50 blender. I never realized how grainy my smoothies were before. Plus, the Vitamix is much faster. I just throw everything in, start on low work it up to high...a minute later a great smoothie.

Now, I know it does much more than make smoothies. I've made Pesto, Coleslaw, and even soup once. Honestly, I still prefer to make soup the old-fashion way, with a good knife and hot pot. With that said, if you buy this just to make smoothies every day, it's worth it. That's primarily what I use it for. Now if you make smoothies once a week, maybe the $50 blender is a better deal for you.

I'll just finish with one of my favorite tool buying sayings, "Buy quality and only cry once, buy cheap and cry everytime you use it." Honestly, I don't miss the $400 I spent last year, but I smile every morning when I have my smoothie. If your on the fence, and think you'd use this product frequently, take the plunge...you'll be glad you did.

Okay,
I too was on the fence about buying a $400 blender, however I read all of the reviews at QVC and it seemed that there were many people just like me who took the plunge and were not disappointed. So I picked one up at Costco (cheaper there and also prefer brick and mortar store for such a high priced item) last week and never looked back.
Here are a few points to consider:
1. THIS SHOULD NOT BE CALLED A BLENDER! Calling this a blender is a disservice to what this thing can really do. It is a food Terminator! In a good way. Even at 40 I hated trying to make sure I had all my servings of fruits and veggies...well this machine makes it extremely quick to serve up my smoothies and they taste great!
2. Did I say how fast it is to process 1 apple, 1 pear, 1 cup of spinach and 5 baby carrots...30 seconds! A vitamin rich smoothie in no time.
3. This machine will save you time not only with the amount of time it takes to consume healthy foods, it will also save time in food prep.
4. As others have said, super easy to clean and is a very high quality product.
5. I have used mine every day, to make a smoothie for lunch and I also smoothiefy any fruits or veggies that my wife makes me eat (now drink) for dinner.
6. For someone who does not own this machine it is very hard to convey that these total fruit and veggie smoothies actually taste great. I know it is hard to believe, however they are really good. The tastes blend together to create a symphony of flavor.
7. I have not touched the reciepe book yet, it is more fun to experiment since I just got this last week. The first day I used it I knew this was exactly what I had been hoping for.
