With the introduction of the S50, Vitamix redefines personal blending, again. In addition to the features found on the S30, like Variable Speed Control, Pulse, easy countertop storage and two container sizes, the S50 offers two pre-programmed settings to take the guesswork out of blending. These programs are specially formatted to deliver optimal processing times for Smoothies and Power Blends. Designed to automatically shut off when the selected cycle has completed, the S50 makes it easier than ever to achieve your perfect blend. The S50 offers the ease and convenience of two pre-programmed settings in a personal blending size, for high-performance blending that fits on your countertop. Two container sizes - a 20 ounce that becomes an instant travel cup with flip top lid and a 40 ounce for small batches of soups, sauces, frozen desserts, and more. The containers, blade base, lids, and seals are all top rack dishwasher-safe, making clean-up quick and easy. The safety interlocking system ensures that if the container is lifted or rocked from the blender base while in use, the motor will automatically shut off for your safety.

So far the only con is that in addition to standard noise there is quite a bit of vibration from the device which I'm more concerned about when blending early and the sound may not reach the neighbors but the vibration will. I set it atop a thick oven mit to absorb the vibration which seems to work (tested with something set on the counter and watch for movement caused by vibrations before and after). The other con is that even though the to-go cup is awesome, you have to carefully plan the items going into your smoothies and optimize it to allow it to not overflow when you put on the blending blade. Since inside the cup there are 4 convex rails that run along the length of the cup (I think maybe to facilitate bringing items into the blade) and reduce the volume of what can actually go in, especially solids like ice and frozen fruit. I've underestimated how much can go in, overfilled it with liquid and when you put on the blade it will overflow. You have some leeway because the blade itself has some extra space, but most of the overflow is caused by liquid spilling through the loose threads (which isn't a bad thing, as it makes it easy to put on and the gasket really does the work to seal the device, another wonderfully user oriented design I love).
Overall I have no regrets on this purchase other than that you can downgrade and get a refurbished model from the vitamix website itself. I found the smoothie setting just runs it on a low setting first to break down the items and the nramps it up to about 7-8 for the duration for further blending. Either way the smoothies setting is useful for me to walk away and do other things while it's blending, which I actually like. Great Product
This thing has changed my life! Find all those weird things lurking in your pantry and throw em in! Don't overfill. I had to make a few to figure out the best proportions of wet to frozen. I like to throw in all the frozen/solids/heavies first, then add the water until 1/3 full. Pulse until everything is sort of incorporated, then blend at around 3-4 for a minute or so. I actually prefer to then put in my spendy protein powders/spirulina because it doesn't end up on one side of the container. You have to push IN the knob to start it, it's a safety feature. I did have to call Support because I didn't figure that out in the beginning! Oh my god, and then it all fits into a 16 oz mason jar that I bring to work and I am so so so happy and ecstatic over how perfect this is going to make my morning routine! Spring is here- start making some smoothies and get rid of those winter blahs!
This morning's excellent smoothie: wild blueberries from the back yard, an almost gone mango, a small blob of: coconut oil, maca powder, chai powder, a few snap peas left over from dinner, spirulina powder, a pinkie of vanilla pod. Enough water to get it all together (like 40% of the way up the side? in 20oz container. Pulse til incorporated, blend at 3-4 until done. I don't like to overblend my smoothies, to me they're yummier with a little texture. I like to do myself instead of using the blender autofunction, I think it revs too high. Enjoy! Pow!!!
- Great for small kitchens because it doesn't take up a lot of kitchen counter space
- Love the 20 oz. personal smoothie cup. It's perfect for my morning smoothies.
- Love the 40 oz. cup now that I make personal portions of everything.
- Really like the preprogrammed settings. I turn the machine on and let it run itself while I do something else.
- Takes a little longer than larger Vitamin
- Machine moves a little on the counter when it's blending, which can be annoying
Overall, I would highly recommend this for a 1 or 2 person household with a small kitchen.
1 star deduction for being overpriced. This thing works well, except i think it's probably a little smaller than I need. My first smoothie was fabulous in the 20oz travel cup. My second was just as nice, but I wanted to make more and there wasn't enough room. Now I'm struggling to decide if I should return it and get the refurbished 5300 for the same price. The 40 oz pitcher is good enough to make 25oz or so of product, at least from what I've experienced so far, but I'm not sure how well the wide bottom pitcher of the 5300 actually blends for my intended purpose... from reading many online reviews, many people suggest getting a second smaller pitcher just in case. So a bit of trepidation in returning it for a different product.
So far I'm not displeased with the results,, but I'll continue to test it to see if it's sufficient. Overall operation and quality appear to be just fine. It does seem to be quite overpriced compared to what you're getting with one of their full sized products.
UPDATE: Yeah, I've returned it. While it was nice, it was very underpowered. I ended up getting a refurbished 5300 and it is quieter and blends better. Definitely get a full size unless it's something you'll be traveling with.
