Wow, I'm shocked that it was so easy. Their customer service is the best!
EDIT: The replacement container was shipped yesterday - the very same day I spoke with customer service!
This is a heavy-duty machine. It is loud when it's in use, but generally you won't need to run the machine for more than a couple minutes at a time. This is definitely a professional quality machine and will yield professional quality results. A regular home blender cannot compare!
The Vita-Mix 1363 CIA model and the Vita-Mix 5200 model are essentially the same machine. The CIA model has some different color choices and comes with a HUGE recipe book called "Create", a smaller "recipes and techniques" booklet and an hour long cooking class DVD. The 5200 model includes a different booklet and DVD. Both have the same 7-year warranty. If the color of the machine and the recipe book don't matter to you, save yourself some $$$ and go for the 5200 model instead.
**Update June 1, 2012: Nearly 3 years after my original purchase I am still loving my Vita-Mix. It still gets used several times a week (sometimes multiple times in a day). It's still a great machine and has given me absolutely no problems. For me, it has definitely been a worthwhile investment!
As I neared the bottom of the glass, I tipped it up at a steeper angle, as one does. It was at this point that I felt something hard hit my front tooth. Upon further investigation, I found that I had inadvertently blended a granite whiskey stone that I did not realize had been left behind in the ice maker by the previous tenants. Okay, I actually didn't even know what a whiskey stone was up until I researched it further, but I've already said I'm an idiot, so cut me some slack.
Anyway, my lack of knowledge on fancy bar accessories is not the point here. My luck in selecting fancy blenders IS. Despite what I put it through that night, my Vitamix continues to quickly liquefy whatever I put in it. As long as I stick with actual food.
The blender itself feels more like a lawnmower when it's running than any run-of-the-mill blender. It never smells like burning plastic, which is a common problem I've had with blenders in the $100-$250 price range that use plastic gearing to rotate base. It blends everything (including nuts, fibrous plant parts) into a smooth, creamy mixture with no discernible "bits". The spout is well designed and does not drip after pouring. The tamper works well. The ability to start at a low speed and increase to the highest speed smoothly prevents any splashing against the top of the container, which makes cleaning even easier. The 7-year warranty is the icing on the cake.
