Stylish but smaller blender jar and not quite an all-in-one replacement..
We had an older generation VitaMix that was always powerful and reliable with very simple on/off/pulse/power controls, but perhaps not the coolest thing to look at. And we also have a Ninja Bullet for making smoothies and such - its great with its one button push settings for smoothies and shakes. And we have a Ninja Creami for making frozen desserts.So this new VitaMix is supposed to be all of those things combined, in a much nicer package. On the latter point, it succeeds wonderfully. Its nice enough looking that we have put it out on our counter instead of away in a cabinet. It has a nice black/white housing and digital gauges. The jar has gotten smaller from our last unit which I don't like - 6 cups down from 8.Its also now has sort of two "modes".Turn the rotary knob to the right to the speed settings, and then the on/off or pulse rocker switches work just like the older unit. It blends powerfully, and is quite a bit quieter than our old unit.Turning the rotary knob to the left is when the magic happens. Here you get presets for "clean", "smoothie", or "frozen desserts". In these modes, toggling it on makes it automatically run a set program, and the digital display counts down the time remaining just like the Ninja products. It makes fine smoothies, but I'd still say the Bullet is better as you end up with a smoothie that is blended in the actual jar you drink it out of, where this VitaMix gives you the drink in a blender jar that you have to pour into a glass or travel mug. I'd also say it isn't as good at making ice creams as is the Creami. The self clean setting is nice and gives you a nice clean blender jar.So its not the all-in-one solution that lets you replace a blender, a Creami, and a Bullet. As a blender, its 10/10. As a smoothie maker, its 8/10 - great power for blending, less convenient for drinking compared to the Bullet. And as an ice cream maker, it doesn't have the re-spin or add in settings that the Creami does, so probably not a very good replacement there.Our last VitaMix is bulletproof - built like a tank. This one feels the same way so its expensive yes but probably the last blender you'll ever need to buy.

The Vitamix is better. Even as a complete blender neophyte, I felt the differences instantly between my ninja and the Vitamix (pictured side by side). Here are the highlights:
- Motor. You know that feeling of awe you get when you climb into a whisper-quiet car after driving your clunker for decades? Yeah. That's what I experienced when first turning on the Vitamix for a self-cleaning cycle. It's not "quiet" (it's a blender, after all), but it *sounds* powerful without being obnoxious.
- Self-cleaning. It works. Attached is a video of the self-cleaning cycle running after I made some almond milk. The thing that impressed me the most is the programming that makes the speed vary at different points in the cycle. Also, that I didn't have to scrub the inside of this thing and worry about catching my fingers on the blades.
- Quality. My almond milk tasted delicious. Creamier, thicker, smoother. Made a curry the next day — came out perfectly textured. No fuss. Ran the self-cleaning cycle afterward, rinsed, and dried. SO easy.
- Size. The base is huge (makes sense; it holds a monster motor) but the design is flawless enough to still clear the cabinets, allowing me to place this on my countertop permanently.
- Tamper. My husband was amazed that I could stick plastic in there without eating plastic in my smoothie later. It's the perfect length to tamp down all the way without touching the blade. Genius.
I feel like I just got a Rolls-Royce after driving a Mustang. I thought the Mustang was cool, but I just didn't know what I was missing out on. If you have the budget and will get your mileage out of this blender, do it. If you're on a liquid diet and need to convince your taste buds to get with the program, this is the blender that can convince them. I'm actually excited to try out different recipes and put this blender to different settings. Godspeed.

I'm not a blender guru. I'm an average blender user, the kind of person who's had twenty-buck blenders all her life and thought a ninja was fancy business. But this past year, I've had to go on a liquid diet for medical reasons, and doc recommended investing in a better blender. I'll admit that I thought all blenders created equal.
