This metric O-ring is made of black Viton and has a durometer of 75A, a round cross-section, and can be used across a wide temperature range (-15 degrees F/-26 degrees C to 400 degrees F/205 degrees C). Designed for use in a wide variety of sealing applications, this Viton O-ring meets standards defined by Aerospace Standard AS568A, which is the Aerospace Size Standard for O-rings.
Viton (fluorocarbon elastomer) has heat, fuel, and chemical resistance and is compatible for use with non-flammable hydraulic fuels, silicone oil, chlorinated hydrocarbons (trichlorethylene), aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene) and aliphatic hydrocarbons (propane). It works well in high vacuum environments and is vulnerable to low molecular organic acids, ammonia gas, alkalis, amines, glycol-based brake fluids, and super-heated steam.
The durometer hardness of this Viton O-ring is 75A. Durometers measure the hardness of a material and its resistance to permanent indentation. A higher durometer value indicates greater resistance to indentation. On a scale of 0 to 100, a value of 0 indicates that a sample was completely penetrated, while a value of 100 shows no indentation in the sample. The letter following the number identifies the shore scale, which is either shore A or D. Shore A is used for softer plastics, while shore D is used for harder plastics.
O-rings provide a pressure and fluid seal between cylindrically shaped, overlapping mating surfaces and are commonly seen in engines, faucets, flanges, valves, and various cylinders. They are circular in shape, with a round cross section, and a hole in the center, similar to a doughnut. O-rings are available in various AS568A dash sizes, which is the standardized sizing for O-rings, and defines the nominal inside diameter (ID), outer diameter (OD), and cross-sectional (CS) diameter of an O-ring.

It may be the nature of DuPont’s Viton that these O-Rings do not offer much stretch at all. The old (perhaps standard rubber) O-Rings were very easy to remove from their seats and stretched easily over the wider shaft to remove them.
While applying the replacements using the Viton O-Ring, the first attempt failed and the O-Ring split while trying to stretch it over the shaft. Being a harder material than the original O-Ring, I may have played a role in the failure by using the wrong tool to slide the ring with (having to use a prying force). There was no such failure using this tool while removing the old rings.
Comparing the old rings and new rings, there is a definite difference in elasticity. Perhaps this is why the old ones failed.
Here is a tip: if you do use these O-Rings to repair your HF Hose Reel, clean up the old seats and apply a little brake grease on them. Slide the first ring (the outer ring) on and let it slip into its seat. This will allow the inner ring to slide past (over) the first ring.
The fix to the hose reel was so fast and simple, I should have done it years ago!
UPDATE for 2015: it's been over 2 yrs since installing this O-ring and the leak has not returned on my car. I've also installed this on several other people's BMWs with the same problem and none of them have come back with the leak. This looks to be a good solution to the P/S cap leak.
Works on sig 226 9mm barrel end cap as well
Searched for a while looking for this.
I do recommend these Viton o-rings,
Perfectly fits M13.5x1 applications (M1x12) oring.
Get a few as they are cheap and eventually wear out. Great on thead protectors and anything else you need 13.5x1 threading for.
