From the USA we are treated to the masterful works of James Bidgood (the cover artist) whose color images recall famous fantasy characters such as Pan and Querelle as well as creations that swim in his magnetic use of color. Michael Bilotta pushes fantasy to the edge, incorporating near sci-fi creations that dazzle with the mysteries they create. Eric Shultis superimposes pattern on his figures, places other in antique frames with the surfaces cracked like old daguerreotypes, or creates dark images with the figures emerging from shadows.
And in keeping with the VITRUVIAN LENS tradition of relating contemporary works to early phases in the history of photograph there is a generously illustrated essay on the pioneering work of Eadweard James Muybridge. Always a step ahead of other journals that deal with figurative photography, VITRUVIAN LENS is obviously around to stay. Pure class! Grady Harp, May 14
