This product has 4 mcg lead per serving (per the manufacturer). The daily recommended max for adults is 12.5 mcg lead. This product says to take 1-3 servings per day. That means 12 mcg per day at 3 servings - meaning almost 100% of your daily lead from just one product !
Love the product, hate the high lead. I'm shopping around for psyllium with lower lead amounts. Organic is not worth that much lead.
For perspective, you can use the TDS (Total Diet Study) to see estimates of lead in the food supply. The highest concentration I saw after doing some basic math was about 2mcg per average sweet potato. So the lead in this product (4mcg) actually is pretty high. I wish it wasn't so... I am torn.
Second Bag Edit: It makes such a huge difference in my IBS-C that I've continued to take it. To assuage my lead concerns, I've actually gotten lead blood tested and plan to continue every 4 months (lead blood testing is cheap, maybe $50). I got my first test after one tsp / day for 2 weeks - and my test result was negligible (less than 1 unit, basically 0). Will update if the tests start coming back higher
That's when I found this product.
Metamucil's big trick is psyllium husk (this), and orange flavoring for... well, flavor. With this, you're getting WAY more value for your money. Same great dietary benefits, with a smaller price tag attached to it. Overall, absolutely love this, and planning on buying this again when I run out.
Regarding the negative reviews around lead levels in the product, there's two big things that aren't being mentioned: First, psyllium husk naturally has lead in it. So, with 100%, pure organic psyllium husk, as you're buying right here, you're going to get some trace amounts of lead. Second, while the FDA has set 12.5 ug as the maximum adults should have every day (and which you would hit if you take the maximum package instructions of 3 teaspoons a day), it's set 10 times lower than what the CDC says is actually dangerous. This means that in order for you to actually poison yourself on this product, you'd have to take THIRTY teaspoons of this stuff. That's a quarter of the bag in one day, which is just ridiculous. It's a lot like soy sauce: In small amounts, it's delicious, but if you chug a pint of it, you're going to nuke your liver.
TL;DR: Yes there's lead in here. No, it's not remotely harmful for you, unless you're shoveling this into your mouth like the sugar in a Fun Dip bag.
