Peppermint oil has a long history—as far back as ancient Greece—of soothing digestive issues, particularly those affecting the lower intestinal tract. Research has shown that peppermint oil helps the body move food out of the stomach. In addition, inhaling peppermint oil can help curb appetite.
Studies have shown that peppermint oil application offers natural relief. Indeed, menthol (the main ingredient in peppermint), creates a cooling sensation when applied to the skin which can benefit athletic injuries, joints, overuse or muscle aches. In addition, topical application of peppermint oil has been shown to be beneficial for symptoms of some types of headaches.
The prevalence of menthol (the main active ingredient in peppermint oil) in so many commercially-available cold and cough remedies is no coincidence. To relieve nasal congestion, keep the respiratory tract clear and promote easier breathing, massage 2-3 drops of Viva Naturals Peppermint Oil (along with your favorite Viva carrier oil) onto your chest or drop into a humidifier.
A whiff of peppermint can increase energy and mental clarity. In fact, studies have shown that students that inhaled peppermint do 25% better on exams. Diffuse Peppermint oil in the room or apply to the back of your neck and shoulders to improve concentration, keep energy levels up, beat that afternoon lull or soldier through a tough workout.
Start with 1 cup of granulated sugar in a mixing bowl. Slowly stir in enough Viva Naturals Jojoba Oil to get a slightly wet and grainy consistency. Mix in a few drops of Viva Naturals Peppermint Oil and combine well. Transfer to a lidded jar or container.
Q: Can peppermint oil be used topically?
A: Peppermint oil is far more concentrated than other oils, which is why it must be diluted with other carrier oils, like Viva Fractionated Coconut Oil or Jojoba Oil. We recommend testing a small patch of skin first, especially with sensitive skin.
Q: What is the ratio of essential oil to water for my aromatherapy diffuser?
A: Each diffuser has its own unique settings and quantity of liquid required may vary. Typically for every 125mL of water added, 4-6 drops of essential oil is recommended.
Q: Can peppermint oil be used while pregnant or nursing?
A: Peppermint oil has been shown to be safe during second and third trimester, and also during lactation, however we always recommend consulting with your healthcare provider before use. Peppermint oil is not recommended for use during your first trimester of pregnancy.
