Gustav Leonhardt, a man who did more than most to kick start the revival of interest in period-instrument performances, once said something along the lines of "once you have learnt the rule book, throw it away." That's clearly advice that Andrew Manze and Christopher Hogwood have taken to heart in this fresh and lively recording. Manze, who once described his frequent harpsichord colleague Richard Egarr as a "bendy" performer, is himself bendy in all the right ways: his phrasing is spontaneous and playful and yet always remains mindful of the pulse, rather in the manner of good jazz. His tone is sweet and pure and always engaging--and he even manages to create some delightfully convincing bird imitations for the bonus concerto, The Cuckoo. Hogwood takes none of Vivaldi's formulaic tropes at face value and squeezes something fresh out of every predictable chord sequence or repeated phrase. The accompanying players all clearly have one ear on the soloist and one on each other, and the result is a rock-solid uniformity of attack and phrasing. In a word, perfect. --Warwick Thompson

These concerti are not as splashy, colorful, and arresting as Vivaldi's top-drawer works. I was actually bored on first hearing. The second time around, the disc came alive for me. The performances are breathtaking, with many interpretative felicities. If you are someone who can enjoy less-than-first-rate music becaue of stellar performances, this recording will delight you. Actually, I did like the music a lot more on repeat hearing. Sound quality is superb. Timing is skimpy-don't tell me these guys couldn't have found additional filler from Vivaldi's 500-plus concerti.

Enjoyable vivaldi. My ears really like Op. 3, 4, 8 and 9 from Vivaldi done by AAM. The shorter opus here is similar and Manze is a different quantity. I liked it, but its not in the same class as the other longer works.

I'm a real fan of Sir Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music. I generally enjoy a lot their readings of the baroque composers (and the classical ones too). For instance, Telemann's Double and Triple Concertos is one of the best recordings I ever listened to. JSB's Brandenburg Concertos are also excellent for my taste. Vivaldi's Four Seasons with them is one of my favourites. I could list much more. However, Jesus Christ!, what happened when they recorded Vivaldi's Op.6?
Vivaldi's Op.6, this series of 6 violin concertos, is not a mostly known feature for average people, but it's a brilliant group of concertos, in which pops the "Vivaldiness" (as to say) in its most typical way. The Op.6 is pure Vivaldi, frenetic, virtuoso, in all his energy and joy. Soloist and ripieno dialogues smoothly and vividly, as almost always in the Redhead Priest.
Well, it happens that there's a Great Performance for this group of concertos, which is the one from I Musici, a rather unbeatable reading! Then, Pina Carmirelli is Vivaldi himself when she plays the solos, accompanied by the famous Italian ensemble, who plays with usual precision and loyalness.
But here, this recording of Hogwood & AAM is completely disappointing and does not resist when compared to I Musici reading. The soloist as well as the orchestra play, let us say, harshly, unpolitely, with little or none subtleness. I don't know why, but the team made a lot of legati disappear and made appear a lot of strange staccati, what makes the hearing weird and unconfortable. Vivaldi's Op.6 here sounds me almost unrecognizable, what makes this, in my point of view, the worst recording I ever listened from this excellent group, Hogwood and AAM. Real pity.
