Style Name: Nikon Verified Purchase
I bought the Vivitar TC, and looked at this as an experiment. For 80 or 90 bucks, I thought, it's worth the chance. I'd been hoping that Nikon's teleconverter was just wildly overpriced at $600. Maybe it is - I still don't know. But I can say that this TC produces very-noticeably muddy, chromatically aberrated (blue on one edge of the subject, red on the opposite) images. It also causes my D90 and Nikon 80-200mm F2.8 lens to hunt viciously for focus, even on a mildly cloudy day. Often, this hunting for focus restarts spuriously after it had settled on a focus previously. I had it on a tripod, so there was no camera movement. I have posted a comparative photo in the product review.

I would not recommend this item.

My guess is that the Nikon is better, but nowhere near significantly better to justify the 8x cost. :-(

The preceding was posted on March 1st, 2011. The following is posted on May 31st, 2011. The Nikon TC referred to is the Nikon TC 20E III ...

--- Just had an opportunity to follow through: A very nice person was selling a Nikon TC 20E III Teleconverter on CL, and allowed me to experiment before buying it. The photos that came out of this experiment are attached to this product's photo list, and the results, I have to say, are disappointing (for the Nikon.) It is about twice the size, and six times the cost, and while it felt more solid, its images were slightly, but not compellingly better than the Vivitar, especially considering the cost difference. So I'm going to be relying on the Vivitar and various sharpening & contrast manipulations while I save my money for a really obscene 400mm lens...

I purchased this for my K-r, mostly to take pictures of the moon. I'd contemplated similarly priced 500mm+ lenses, but as I've got pretty lousy eyesight, I wanted to take advantage of autofocus with my 55-300mm kit lens. This item isn't large or heavy or difficult to use. Seems sturdy and connects to both body and lens quite satisfactorily. The autofocus is slow of course, but it's usable and reliable in high contrast. I was able to get accurate autofocus of the moon at 300mm f/5.6 (I'll try to attach one of the pictures I took), well slower than what the rating on the box said the autofocus would work with (I think it said f/4 was the slowest). You'll need to be very steady, but I was able to get usable handheld shots at 600mm just leaning on things and using the camera's image stabilization. I can't wait to try it out in some different settings, but for now I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

This little addition is a real lifesaver for me. I bought it for my Nikon D3000
so I would have a way to achieve more distance with the other lenses. The standard
package with the 18-55mm and the 55-200mm work very well with the converter.
The piece is very light and on my camera it fits very snug and no issue with it falling off.
The lenses that fit on the converter are also real snug. I also have a Sigma 70-300mm
which is the main reason why I made the purchase. It equates to a 140-600mm reach
which is better than having it look across the street for distance.

For the most part, it works great for my reasons and since I have used it a lot
in the past month, I would not give it up for anything.

I read the reviews and hoped for the best when I ordered this item. The real doubler lenses by big companies like Canon are expensive and the one I order from them before doesn't fit my lenses. I wanted to give this one a try and it kinda works. I was able to use it with the smaller lenses that own like the standard 18-55 and the 55-80. But when I tried it with the 75 to 300 it lost pretty much all detail.

The edges were very blurry like looking down a tunnel of some sort. The little lenses were fine but not good with the larger lenses. Also when I used this with the smaller lenses I would not consider the distance doubled. Its indeed closer but not doubled.

I bought this to use with my Nikon d800 and 18-55 and 55-300 AF lenses. When it didn't focus automatically, I called the vendor and they could not figure out why it wasn't compatible. I tried using it with my Nikon d60 and my 55-200 AF lens. It didn't work with that combo either. It appears to work ok with using the MF mode. But I didn't buy it for MF; I wanted to use it in AF mode.
I would not recommend this lens if you expect to use it in AF mode.

If you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on pro tele lens, this tele converter is a great solution. This is for outdoor shooting such as bird watching. 200 mm lens will become 400 mm. It works better on enough light situation. I think it is designed for static or slow moving objects. It might not be good for fast moving sports unless it is in a bright condition.

This 4-element 2x teleconverter works great. I have had great fun taking photos with it. I did not do extensive tests with it, but in casual shooting, I did not notice any aberrations. Since you lose a couple of stops of light you should only use with a bright lens and in broad daylight.

I did not expect perfection but I used to sell cameras (about four decades ago) and recall Vivitar having good accessories. Not only was the fit and finish "rough," but this telextender did not work at all in autofocus. It caused my primary lens to actually "jump" (with an audible clicking sound) internally. I had to return it.

However this is where Amazon beats all competition. The return was flawless and fast. I was able to print out a return form and a prepaid shipping label. My credit card was refunded about six hours after the UPS tracking was scanned at our local UPS store. This was only my second return - EVER - with Amazon - but the service exceeded my expectations,
