A Vocabulary of Etchemin (American Language Reprints, 39) Hardcover

Purchase options and add-ons

In 1605, James Rosier obtained 86 words of an unnamed language along the coast of Maine, first printed in Samuel Purchas's Pilgrimes (1625). Rosier's vocabulary has mixed Maliseet/Eastern Abenaki characteristics and possibly represents the Etchemin language. Also included in this volume is a more certain list of the Etchemin numbers from 1-10 recorded by Marc Lescarbot in 1607.
