This isn't a word for word translation, but an effort to put the text into contexts more appropriate to the time in which particular words were written. One of the worst ways to read the Bible is through a 21st century lens and this version of the Bible seeks to remove that 21st century lens and it does.
Breaking down the words according to the speaker is really helpful in dialogue-rich sections, as well as indenting the dialogue sections. Narrative is lined up with the left margin. More white space breaks up large chunks of text, which is easier on the eyes.
There is a lot of historical background and explanation with this version, as well as delineation between speakers, footnotes, attempts at clarification--which are clearly marked, and other reader-assists as well.
This is a version I will use, but not my first go-to translation (ESV The ESV Study Bible is my go to). But, along with the Literary Study Bible,The Literary Study Bible: ESV - English Standard Version it's a good alternative way to read well-known stories. I'm forced to think a bit more about what I'm reading; a good thing when dealing with familiar stories.

Compared to the Amplified Bible, the expanded language helps flow much more smoothly, and it has a limited Commentary built-in. The Key Word Study Bible is much better suited to formal word studies. But the Voice does a really good job of bringing the original language to life, and putting it in modern context in an exceptionally readable format. As with any study or expanded Bible, always remember that the editor's notes are not as inspired as the text.
THIS VERSION WOULD BE MUCH MORE RELIABLE IF IT WERE PRINTED WITH A PARALELL SIDE BY SIDE WITH THE NEW AMERICAN STANDARD BIBLE. "VOICE" AS USED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT IS NOT A GOOD REPLACEMENT FOR "WORD" AS USED IN JOHN 1. VOICE IS A METHOD OF CARRYING ANY SOUND BUT WORD CONVEYS A PARTICULAR SOUND WITH A DISTINCT MEANING TO CONVEY A THOUGHT PRECISELY.
