Editorial Reviews
It would be fellow Criss Cross associate Walt Weiskopf who would bring Conrad Herwig into the label's fold back in 1992. The trombonist would then go on to record his own Criss Cross debut, Heart of Darkness in 1998. Now some 15 years into his tenure, Herwig has recorded eight remarkable and engagingly diverse albums with A Voice Through the Door being his latest breakthrough. Highlighting a distinguished composer, this inspired recital includes seven new Herwig originals along with a reworking of the standard All or Nothing At All. Then emphasis is on shared communication, an aspect that is clearly evident through Herwig's long track record with pianist Orrin Evans and drummer Donald Edwards. Adding something new to the mix, however, are new associations with tenor man Ralph Bowen and bassist Kenny Davis, themselves frequent collaborators going back to their days with the band Out of the Blue.

The title song "A Voice Through the Door" sets the tone for this swinging collection of songs. A memorable theme is played by the two horns over a driving rhythm section which sets up a series of skillful improvisations by Herwig, Bowen and Evans before leading us into an exciting dialogue with Edwards and his drum kit.
"Traceless Moon" features an appealing horn chart and virtuoso leads played by trombone, sax, piano and bass. The emphasis is on shared communication and mutual respect as each soloist explores the possibilities in this fine composition.
The talented ensemble sets the house on fire in the appropriately titled "The Sun Within". Herwig, Bowen and Evans deliver scorching solos with extraordinarily responsive support from the rhythm section.
"Morning Shade" is a pleasing mid tempo number that is noteworthy for its top-notch extended improvisations by Herwig and Bowen.
"Water Rising Into Mist" features a shuffle beat and playful chord structure that inspires Evans, Herwig and Bowen to deliver some of their most creative performances in the set.
"All or Nothing at All" is yet another up tempo crowd pleaser whose highlights include a series of exquisite interchanges between Herwig and Bowen with great support from piano, bass and drums.
"Thorn Witness" slows down the pace a bit allowing Herwig and Bowen plenty of space to stretch out and express their unique personalities. Davis delivers a soulful bass solo that nicely complements the intricate dialog in the horn section.
"Free Action Reaction" closes the set with an incredible series of solo exchanges centered around Edwards' work on percussion.
I highly recommend this recording to listeners who enjoy acoustic jazz played with extraordinary integrity, passion and skill.
