The Voices of the Pioneers: Homeschooling in Minnesota Paperback – March 4, 2014

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

The Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators (MÂCHÉ) brings you this collection of first-hand stories of more than a dozen homeschool pioneers. Sit down with a hot beverage and enjoy this conversational-style history of those who ventured to do what was considered less than legal and more than a little bit crazy. Learn why parents removed their children from public schools to educate them at home and how these pioneers fought for that right before local courts, district courts, the Minnesota Supreme Court, and in hearings before both the Minnesota House and Senate. Witness the birth of MÂCHÉ and its thirty years of growth and influence. Be informed, encouraged, and inspired by these mostly ordinary yet courageous people.

Great book! I had no idea that homeschooling only became legal in 1987! It was so inspiring to read how the homeschooling pioneers took a stand for our freedom to educate our children at home, even at the risk of going to jail for it. I especially enjoyed reading of the favor God gave those who took a stand in the political realm for our right to homeschool in Minnesota. I have a much greater appreciation for the freedom to homeschool and for those who went before and paid the price. This book also made me very thankful for the work of MACHE. Thank you for writing this book! It would be good for every homeschooler to read it...and all educators for that matter!

This book was extremely well researched and reads very well. The history of our state's first homeschooling families is something too easily forgotten. This book is like an heirloom. It's our history and something I will hand down to our homeschooled kids to remind them of our freedom.

This book is an excellent look at the history of homeschooling in Minnesota. Though I am a public school teacher, I fully support the rights of parents who choose to homeschool their children. This book is a reminder that those rights must be guarded and preserved. In addition, the book is full of wisdom about teaching and raising children, and more than once I grabbed my highlighter so I could mark the truths that stood out to me.

The Voices of Pioneers is an exciting glimpse into the groundbreaking of Minnesota homeschooling. I'm a homeschool graduate from Houston, Texas and found this book informative about the price many have paid for educational freedom. Filled with interviews from the parents, political powers, and friends who made Minnesota alternative educating options legal, I recommend this to anyone who is interested in or curious about homeschooling.

The Voices of the Pioneers offers a unique look at homeschooling from the perspective of families who homeschooled before it was considered legal in Minnesota. I would recommend this book to homeschooling parents and students--whether they live in Minnesota or elsewhere--so that they too could be inspired by the faith, dedication, and vision of homeschooling's first generation. It's easy to read, informative, and perspective-changing.
