While not as good as their rookie season Vol 1, this album is a good follow-up. The album is a little more "country" than I would like, but there are enough powerpop hooks on this album. There is no disappointment in the stories, nostalgia and baseball history here. It's a fun album.

What happens when a few baseball-addicted musicians get together to make an album? The answer is, a totally fresh and inspired collective called the Baseball Project. On this, their second album as a "supergroup," the Baseball Project delivers in the clutch again. As the both the band's name and album title would indicate, the songs are all odes to favorite players ("Ichiro Goes to the Moon" and "Buckner's Bolero", teams ("Don't Call them Twinkies"), or baseball traditions ("Chin Music" and "Fair Weather Fans"). Many of the songs are about players that these musicians grew up idolizing (such as Pete Rose and Tony Conigliaro), but one song also honors current players on the San Francisco Giants ("Panda and the Freak"). Even if you aren't a baseball fan, it's hard not to get caught up in the infectious spirit of these songs. The band's batting average remains high!

Its the music on this edition of the Baseball Project that I really love, although the song topics are rich and rewarding too. The Please Don't Call the Twinkies song is ripping good fun, and the song about Bill Buckner, with Yo La Tengo's Ira Kaplan laying down some freak-out guitar wailing, is another highlight. My kids 5 and 3 dance in front of the stereo for the entire first side. Its a kick and a worthy follow-up to the first one.

I enjoy the music a lot on this second outing by The Baseball Project. Just really fun music different than anything else being played on the radio. For the price it is worth the money to see if you'll enjoy it.
