Complaints about the utility knife (box cutter): The locking mechanism didn't work on the one I got, so I have to hold the plastic slider in place as I slice - I won't be able to use it for anything much thicker/tougher than a small corrugated cardboard box. And the plastic slider is only three bumps of hard plastic which hurts my thumb more than the typical single piece of ridged plastic/metal. The black plastic end of the knife doesn't lock in place well and slides off very easily - it actually slid off in my hand while I tested the knife. I will probably buy myself another utility knife. This one is pretty flimsy and crappy quality.
Note about the tape measure: It works well enough. It has both metric and imperial systems. The lock is secure enough if I don't pull on the tape *at all* while measuring, and the tape retracts VERY FAST and a bit sharply. I'm used to putting my thumb above the exit/entrance of the tape, but I can't with this one because when the tape retracts it flips up a bit and hits the front of the tape measure box.
Other than the box's opening mechanism and the utility knife, I am very satisfied with this tool set. It has a nice number of low/moderate-quality tools, especially for the price. Good variety for basic around-the-house use. Would recommend to a friend.
But for $20, we were able to put all our IKEA furniture together and that's all I could ask for. A handyman would probably look at this set and scoff, but it served our purpose well.
His grandfather explained all of the tools to him and emphasized the danger of the razor knife. A couple of hours later, after a trip to Lowe's, a wooden cart complete with wheels, was rolled into the house with my grandson beaming. Mission accomplished!
This is a good, sturdy, complete toolset that is good for both the handyman or woman in the house or even the budding carpenter. It was money well spent.
