I live in a motorhome, so space is at a premium, and so is amperage. My entire "house" has to run smoothly on only 30 amps, which is why I chose such a small heater (space-wise), and also one which gives you the choice of how many watts to use. This one comes with two separate 750 watt switches, so if you want all 1500 watts, you just use both switches.
You can also run the "fire" without heat, which is what I do when it's warm enough in here. At night, I turn off the fire effect, move it to the center of the kitchen (which is about the center of the total living space), and leave it running with the thermostat set on high, and one or both 750 watt switches turned on. The low outside at this time of year is 40 degrees, and I wake up to a home that's a perfect 69 degrees this way, without using a single bit of propane (electricity is free for me).
As others have said, the top and sides of the heater remain cool to the touch, which is really, really, really nice. It can even double as a side table!
I'm subtracting two stars for two reasons:
(1) The stupid location of the ON switch, which is at the very bottom near the right leg, where the heat comes out! They could have put that switch anywhere else and it would have been fine. Why isn't it inside the control panel next to all the other switches and dials?
(2) More seriously, one of the legs fell off and cannot be put back on. You are supplied with 3 metal screws per leg, but they screw into relatively soft plastic. On one leg, not just one, but all three of the screws came loose, and will not stay screwed in. So far I've tried two different glues, and am trying another solution. If that doesn't work, I'm not sure what to do after that. I appreciate an affordable price, but not at the expense of function.
Then I moved it to where I needed it. It heated a 250 sq ft room in just a few mins. It would heat a larger area I'm sure.
Great! And it looks good too! May buy more!
This is Virginia. Not even the mountains of Virginia. Not Upstate NY, New England or the Upper Midwest. This is really cold for us. The 1500W portable VonHaus space heater could not have been delivered at a better time; right at the onset of a very cold string of days.
As we tried to show in our uploaded video, it was boxed quite well and arrived quickly in perfect condition. After unboxing, the only assembly required was to screw on the legs... three screws per leg to hold them well in place... and that took a total of 5 minutes at most. After that we wiped down the unit with a cloth to make sure that it was clean of packing material, then set about putting it to use.
Our daughter's bedroom just does not seem to have great air flow from our central HVAC system, as it is always a bit colder in winter and hotter in summer than the rest of the house. Now, thanks to this great little VonHaus heating unit, the chill is gone.
Operating this heater really is simple and the instruction manual is helpful and succinct, with only a couple translation oddities. The first thing that you need to do is find an appropriate location - one with at least 6 inches of clearance from the back and sides that allows the heating unit's fan to flow unobstructed. The blower of the heating unit is actually situated under the unit, as is the on/off power switch, and you want to position it so that the hot air blows out to an open space.
Since we had proper spacing to use it, and since the heater has an automatic shut-off mechanism in case of overheating, we felt doubly comfortable putting this particular unit in her room. Once in the proper place -- we plugged it in, reached underneath (right front) and pushed on the power switch, and then opened the front panel to access the controls. From left to right, those controls are as follows:
1. Thermostat dial: Controls the desired temperature; clockwise is warmer, while counter-clockwise is cooler
2. Blower on/off switch: Turns the fan on or off
3. Heating element #1 on/off switch: Turns one of the two 750W heating elements on
4. Heating element #2 on/off switch: Turns the other 750W heating element on
5. Log & fire lighting on/off switch: Turns the ambiance on/off... the heater works well either way
6. Lighting intensity dial: If you like the lighting ambiance, you can adjust how bright it is with this dial
That's it. Simple. Easy. Very effective.
As with all brand new heating appliances, when we first turned the unit on it took a few minutes for the "new heater smell" to go away... just like the first time you turned your car heater on for the season, or fired-up your new stove or oven, it's just something that new appliances go through and it clears up in just minutes.
We initially turned on both 750W elements to get the full 1500W heating pushed into our daughter's 240 square foot bedroom, and this heater did a remarkable job. Its fan is not going to blow papers around in the room, but it is a constant, light flow of air that moves the heat gently away from the heater and does its job well. After just 15 minutes of warming the room up at 1500W, we opted to turn one of the 750W elements off and run the heater using just one 750W element. That's how we have used the heater since, and it continues to do and excellent job.
One note on the fan: We were surprised by how relatively quiet the fan motor is, given experiences with other space heater units (mostly as a kid, when growing up). You can hear it, but it is like a constant flowing river in the background... our daughter actually likes it, saying that the fan motor acts as 'white noise' creating a nice background for sleeping.
This heater is very portable too. Its feet splay a bit outward to enhance stability, and from the widest point of the feet this heater is about 17 inches from left to right, about 11 inches from front to back, about 20 inches from the floor to the top, and it weighs in at just about 14 pounds. If you have the need for a space heater, this one can go just about anywhere that you have an electrical outlet available.
The heater's instruction manual notes that it is covered by a 12 month limited manufacturer's warranty, so if an issue arises before that period expires I will return here to update the review and let you know what the issue was and how resolution was handled. We received this excellent heater gratis from the seller and put it to immediate use during this extremely cold period to objectively find out how well it performed. My statements here reflect that testing.
This has been an excellent space heater for our needs. If you are looking for portable, nicely-designed space heater of this size, construction, and price, with 750W / 1500W power and the noted functionality, for use as I have described above, then we would highly recommend giving this VonHaus 1500W Portable Electric Heater unit a try based on our experience with it.
Easy to setup & use, and we found it to be highly effective for the space we are using it in.
Go for it.
