After the inner bowl is frozen for 8 hours I add my favorite ingredients and 20 minutes later I have soft ice cream. If I want it to be harder I freeze it in a different container for a little longer but I actually prefer the consistency of the ice cream as it just made, so I make small amounts. I have made ice cream, sorbet, and frozen yoghurt. Super easy and I am able to experiment with non-standard ingredients and get the sweetness to my own liking (I don't like it to be super sweet).
The ice creams comes out smooth and rich, no ice crystals. The ice cream maker is not very loud. You can see and hear it making ice cream in my video. One key point about making the ice cream is to start the blades going before adding the ingredients otherwise some of the liquid freezes at the bottom of the bowl. In my video you see my first experiment with the ice cream maker and I put the ingredients in first, then started the blades. When I was done I saw some of the cream frozen on the bottom of the bowl and wasted. Now I put the cover on, turn on the blades, and pour the cream through the opening in the cover.
The inner bowl is 7" wide and 6" tall. It produces 1 1/4 Quart of ice cream. It is fairly large but not huge. I typically keep the inner bowl in the freezer so I can make ice cream on a whim without having to wait 8 hours.
This ice cream maker is provided by VonShef. Its a winner!
Ali Julia review
I came back to Amazon and read the product reviews to see if I could figure out what went so disastrously wrong. From what I read, it seemed that the people who got soup and milkshake hadn't been able to get their freezers cold enough to freeze the gel adequately in the inner tub. The manual does stress keeping the tub in for at least 8 hours in the freezer, preferably overnight. The reviewers were saying that was just the start. You need to get your residential freezer down to below zero degrees. I checked out my freezer setting and saw that it was set at Level 3 out of 5 which is the recommended freezer setting. I quickly dropped that puppy down to the coldest, Level 5, and put the tub in the back of the freezer and tried again 24 hours later. Result: Milkshake soup all over again - at the coldest setting my freezer can go.
So, I arranged for a return of this item and a refund through Amazon, not VonShef. (It's a free UPS pick up back to the house for those of you wondering how much of a hassle a return might be.) I also read reviews on the two competitor models in the same price range and found the same complaints for the people getting soup: If you don't have a deep freezer, just an ordinary residential one, you probably will not get the inner bowls cold enough to solidly freeze the gel. Without that, you are setting yourself up for disappointment, regardless of the brand. The under-reporting of this salient fact by the company is why I'm giving 1-star and not 3. VonShef and these other companies, I think, would prefer everyone go out and purchase these machines knowing that many residential freezers simply can't get to the appropriate temperature. If a few people grumble and stick the machine in a cupboard, well, that's a win for them.
Right now, I've got my freezer back up to Level 3 and I'm hand stirring my custard every hour to basically do a hand churn. I know now not to even bother trying another brand, although an old-style ice cream maker might be a possibility if I become more patient and can deal with bags of ice and rock salt. Feels unlikely...
* Don't wash in dishwasher
* Freeze inner bowl for at least 8 hours on flat surface. Freeze inside a plastic bag.
* Turn on machine before adding COLD liquid
I find that I make about 1.5-1.6 cups of flavored liquid; I also only use about 1 - 1.5 tablespoons of sugar/maple syrup/agave nectar per batch. I found a basic recipe and flavor it as the mood takes me.
