So far we've made steamed buns, a variety of steamed vegetables, steamed fish, and chicken.
My favorite part is how easy it is!
I don't have a wok, so I just fill my 9" kettle with water and place this steamer on top and set it to high, when I know it's steaming, I reduce heat to med-high so it's not a violent boil the whole time.
I LOVE how it cooks broccoli and asparagus. Before this, I was trying to steam in a saucepan with a wire strainer and it's just not the same...
Definitely suggest to anyone looking to broaden their cooking knowledge and simple reduce the work when it comes to eating healthy.
By the way, we made flounder the other night and it was exceptional! just placed on parchment paper, a little salt pepper and lemon juice, steamed for 15 minutes and it was Perfection!
No butter, no oil, absolutely delicious!
Side note, it comes with 2 sets of chopsticks. We haven't used them yet since my girlfriend and I have a nicer set. But it's still a nice addition. I actually used one to poke holes in my siopao so they could 'breathe' in the steamer.
All in all, I would buy this again.. In fact I may actually buy another one just for fish (Ours doesn't have a fishy odor [yet] but if we make fish 3 times a week in it I could see it absorbing something eventually)
I highly recommend this steamer. It will provide you with many years of satisfaction!
One negative is the beautiful metal banding does get super hot, use mittens to remove
So far, I've used this in a wok and over a saucepan. It worked well both ways. I steamed blue crabs over a saucepan and they cooked evenly and quickly. With parchment lined down, it was quick to clean and didn't leave behind a fishy smell or taste on the bamboo. Most of our use has been in a wok and it works a little better that way. We've steamed everything from bao to broccoli and mixed vegetables and it handles everything nicely.
The main reason I prefer this over a traditional, stainless steel steamer is that it seems much more gentle on what you are steaming. Maybe it is just me, but I used to always get bits and pieces of broccoli stuck to the bottom of a steel steamer. That has not happened since using this one.
It doesn't take up much space and looks attractive on the shelf, so this is a good choice for those with a small, apartment sized kitchen like myself.
Overall, this is a good purchase if you are looking for a steamer and steam things often. It makes it a breeze to cook quick, healthy meals.
Yes, I would buy this again
(It came with a package of wax paper liners. I haven't tried them yet, but I think I will like using them.)
The chopsticks and the parchment paper where a nice bonus. Definitely helpful with he paper for the dumplings.
I went through a found online method to help wash out your new steamer and the steps were kinda like this:
1st: Wash entire thing quickly in warm water, with LIGHT soap. Enough for the outside and bottom.
2nd: Soak entire thing in hot water from tap for 1 hour. Drain.
3rd: Refill with tap cold water and let soak 2 hours, after that drain and dry well.
This is to help seep out some of the fresh bamboo taste. My cooking so far still has it lightly, it just not as pronounced as it would have.
