It's a bit of a long story:
I moved to this humidifier after being frustrated by how difficult to clean my ultrasonic (misting) humidifiers were. They turned black and gray after only a week, and with three in the house, I don't have the time to clean them.
Research and Decision-Making
I learned from Consumer Reports that every ultrasonic humidifier they tested spewed at least some bacteria into the air, but the evaporative ones didn't. That made me interested in evaporative humidifiers like these (EVDC300). I really wanted to buy from Vornado, but these didn't have as high a star rating as I typically look for. After hours upon hours (an embarrassingly long time!) of research, I decided to try them. The product has a strong guarantee on it ("5 Year Satisfaction Guarantee" is printed on the box), so I figured any issues I have could be mitigated by the manufacturer.
Purchase and Initial Experience
I bought three EVDC300 units right away. One of them continually turned off (as some others in the reviews experienced). I called Vornado and after a little back and forth they sent me a replacement unit.
Performance and Satisfaction
I've been using the humidifiers for almost a month. They have kept visually clean. I don't see any bacteria/mold growth. They're easy to fill. They reached and maintain the humidity set point (confirmed by a third-party hygrometer).
Downsides (outweighed by the upsides)
Filters need to be replaced every so often. And the fan can be loud if the room is well below the humidity set point. I don't mind either of these if it means I'm not breathing mold and that the humidifiers essentially keep themselves clean. I'm a happy customer and want to buy more.

No Automatic Shut-off. Easy fix for some...
Once Working, it's a very nice unit. Automatic Shut-off on mine didn't work because the float switch magnet/float was not buoyant enough. The fix for mine was to add a "cork donut" to the bottom of the float. The cork sheet I used is 1/16" thick. As shown in the image, you don't need all the fancy tools to make one. Don't have cork sheet, the bottom of a styrofoam coffee cup should work fine. Just cut out a flat piece the same size as the float, make sure the center hole is large enough, so it moves freely up and down with the float. Cut through one side of the donut so it can be “screwed” around the end stop of the float shaft (this way no glue is required, the unit is not modified so, the warranty is still good).Test your fix by removing the tank while the unit is running. In an hour or two the tank light should begin “breathing” indicating the unit will shut down.Please follow all safety instructions in the owner’s manual...

The EVDC500 is a cool wick evaporative unit, so it doesn't leave the white mineral residue "cool mist" units do. Since it doesn't heat water to generate steam, it's more energy efficient and the humidity is more natural. The unit works well and maintains precise humidity levels between 40% and 60% - normal household range - adjustable in 5% increments. It's well made and intelligently designed. Pros: modular design, easy to take apart and clean; simple settings, easy to use, set and forget; DC motor is energy efficient, quiet "eco" setting. Fast, friendly, customer service.
Cons: fan is noisy on high setting; evaporator wicks need seasonal replacement; tanks are made of fragile hard plastic, must be removed for filling, will break if dropped.
One of the tanks on my unit arrived with a crack - not a result of shipping. Customer service FedExed a replacement which I received the next day, no questions asked. Now that's what I call reliable customer service,
Update: The unit works perfectly after several months of 24/7 use (humidifying my guitar room). No problems at all, so I've upgraded this review from 4 to a well deserved 5 stars.
