At 1-inch thick, these Vornado MD1-0034 Humidifier Replacement Wicks (2-Pack) are designed to fit Vornado EV100, EV200, EVDC300, EVDC500, Evap2, and Evap40 evaporative humidifiers. An antimicrobial treatment helps protect the wick filter from bacteria growth. No cleaning is required and the wicks are disposable. The superior performance promised of Vornado's evaporative humidifiers is realized only when genuine Vornado wicks are used and replaced at the recommended intervals. While other brands may fit our units, these wicks do not carry the same quality and life as our own and can diminish the humidifier’s performance. Vornado wicks are developed from the highest quality materials that work to absorb the maximum amount of water while filtering the circulating air.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
It was taking 4 days to evaporate all 4 gallons from the humidifier. I complained directly to Vornado. They said that the correct wick is the MD1-0001 and they sent me a free set. Behold... The unit evaporated 4 gallons in about a day and a half.
This wick may be fine for other humidifiers, just not the EVAP-40.
Soaked a new set in HOT water + vinegar (2 gallons water, several tablespoons white vinegar), and allowed to soak for 20 minutes. Installed as normal, taking care to ensure the filters were flush against the sides of the unit, so the air must pass through them (and not around them).
Seems to be working MUCH better! Water wicked further up, there's no "new filter" smell, and I'm going through the full 2-gallons of water every ~12-14 hours.
Not sure why this helps. Maybe the combination of HOT water + vinegar partially removes some of the coating? From the insert in the box, the microbial preservatives are: Cellulose (9004-34-6) & Pyrithione zinc (13463-41-7).
Cellulose: stuff in plant fiber
Pyrithione zinc: stuff in anti-dandruff shampoo, has fungistatic and bacteriostatic properties (also used by 3M in household sponges)
Neither of the above should really prevent the wicks from soaking up water, so I'm thinking the hot water/vinegar "softens up" the fibers or something. Whatever it does, it seems to make a huge difference. My humidifier is working again! :)

I'm not sure if these are counterfeit products, or if Vornado has changed how they make their filters, but these are NOT THE SAME product as what I was purchasing at Bed Bath & Beyond - despite the packaging looking the same.
I can no longer afford to buy many of these every year as the cost is becoming exhorbitant. This is my last set as I am switching to a filter-free unit.
