As a bonus, we no longer need to need to run a Marpac Dohm-DS Dual Speed Sound Conditioner white noise machine in their room at night. The fan has four speed settings. The highest setting is wicked loud -- and crazy effective. It'd be hard to be in the room for too long on the highest speed, but it can cool things down very quickly. On the second to highest speed, the fan is effective at both cooling a room overnight and producing a decent amount of white noise.
I measured the noise. On high, the Vornado 154 Whole Room Tower Fan generates noise from low 70s peaking at even 80 decibels. Second highest sits in about 62 to 64 dB peaking low 70s. Second lowest is just under 60 decibels -- right about 57 db. Lowest is under 50 decibels.
So, if the white noise is not a problem, or might even be seen as a benefit -- this is a great choice of a fan. It cools better than a portable swamp cooler, amazingly.
I liked mine so much I bought another for my office. I no longer need to hear co-workers chatter if I need to concentrate.
The reason I gigged it to 4-Stars is that the fan turns on to its highest setting as soon as the power is applied. Any loose papers in the vicinity are likely to be blown away until the speed is dropped to Setting Two or One. For this reason, using the remote to turn it on is less useful. I usually stand directly in front of the fan in order to keep the morning's newspaper from decorating the rest of the room.
If Vornado would have simply made Setting One the default speed, allowing the user to kick it up to the appropriate level, I would have unhesitatingly given it the full 5-Stars.
UPDATE: The smell is gone and we love the fan.
What works well -
This is my first remote controlled Vornado. So far, so good. It's been about four months of usage and the remote works flawlessly.
With the fan on the lower two settings, the fan is relatively noiseless (for a fan anyway) and it still moves air well.
What's going wrong -
As many other reviewers have mentioned, at the 3rd and 4th setting (the higher settings) the fan is pretty loud - even for a Vornado. Unfortunately, for the noise is makes, it doesn't push as much air as it sounds like it should. Compared to a normal Vornado whole room circulator, I'd say it does maybe half the actual air volume (at least it feels that way).
The other problem with the fan is that you can only feel the air from a very specific point. Move slightly to the right or left of the silver line and you won't feel a thing. It's very much like it's moving a blade of air. So if you like indirect air movement, this is not the fan for you.
Stick with the normal Vornado fans, this tower fan just isn't a great addition to the Vornado line up.
Other than that, it pushes air with about a 30-40 degree window, no panning involved so it is a constant stream all the time.
Even on the lowest setting it pushes air pretty far, you can easily feel it across my living room (20ft).
The highest setting is crazy amazing and it almost feels like you are riding your bike into the wind, just a fairly loud wind.
One other downfall, that can be easily circumnavigated, is the bright blue led lights at the top, super distracting at night, covered mine with electrical tape for now.
All in all, great product, love the remote, the super intense blue light at the top could be fixed, but I like it.
Now this review is only a week old, so if this fan lasts at least 3 years, it should be worth the cash.

It doesn't oscillate, but makes up for that with the slanted grille. Another upside to not oscillating is no extra motor inside heating up the internals, also no wobbling. Read morePublished 14 months ago by harlow
It is a very loud, not so great air circulator. Very disappointing given how highly rated it is.Published 16 months ago by Greg
