Cherry Mx-Blue

Cherry Mx-Blue : Tactile, clicky switches

MX Blue switches are click-style switches that provide much more substantial audible and tactile feedback with each keypress. Click-style key-switches tend to have higher reset positions and require greater actuation force. Gamers and writers will enjoy these switches.

Clicky switches add a deliberately louder ‘click’ sound to the existing tactile bump, allowing for greater typing feedback. This makes it easier to know that you’ve hit the activation point. This is achieved by a more complicated mechanism, with a blue plunger and a white slider. When the actuation point is reached, the slider is propelled to the bottom of the switch and the click noise is produced.

This is the best quality keyboard I have ever used----edit--currently having issues
This is the best quality keyboard I have ever used. I didn't understand what people were referring to when they would mention quality keycaps until now. I like Das too, but their keycaps feel cheap compared to the Vortex keys.--EDIT-- I spoke too soon. I have had issues the past month with the keyboard after waking my Mac from sleep. The keyboard is sometimes unresponsive and requires me to unplug from the keyboard for a second or two. It resolves the issue however it is annoying that I have to do this every day or so. It might be the OS (MacOS Mojave), however I have no issues with any other keyboard connected to this same machine.

    This keyboard is amazing.

pros great build quality of keycaps, switch, and body, compact design makes mouse + keyboard more ergonomic, feels awesome and tactile to type on, looks cool, keys do not rattle or ring, sound very satisfying, keyboard feels ergonomic

cons - you're not likely to find a custom keycap set that will work with this layout. Nonstandard esc, del, shift, and maybe a few others mean few if any keycap sets will be compatible. I THINK that signature plastics will let you add extra custom keys when you purchase their keycaps, so i believe it is possible albeit kind of expensive, but massdrop etc. keysets are typically not in this layout. That being said I seriously doubt you'll be disappointed with the quality of these keycaps unless you insist on a more contoured profile. I think the flat DSA profile feels great. I also lay the keyboard flat (don't use the included stands for the back) and it feels very ergonomic. I GUESS that the printing on the keycaps is off center for a few keys but you'd have to be extremely psycho to care. I really love the flat, thick DSA profile keycaps this comes with. That's a $50+ value in and of it's own. If you like the color/style and don't plan on swapping it out you will be very happy.

    A note on layout:
I went with 75% over 60% keyboard (Like the Pok3r, KBP V60 to name a few) because I'm an Engineer that uses AutoCAD at work I need my function row and arrow keys. I use a separate numpad (Leopold FC210TP) for any extensive data entry or just whenever I feel like reaching for the numpad instead of the number row. But this keyboard still offers the advantages of a compact keyboard (portability, mouse straight in front of you, not bending wrists to left or right to type). If the keycaps were a standard size or this setup was easier to get keycaps for it would be perfect.

    A note on switch type:
I had tried both the Vortex Race 3 and the Pok3r w/ the clear switches because I was obsessed with not bottoming out. However, that was based on my experience with another keyboard. Bottoming out on this keyboard actually feels great, and you get that nice click from the blue switch and clack from the bottoming out. Clears eventually just fatigued my fingers too much to be worth it and I had to moderate my typing force, so ultimately they were just too stiff. I do use it in an office setting and so far have no driven my coworkers mad as far as I know. This keyboard seems to sound better than other mx blues that I've tried, but also I think my office sort of absorbs sound well and people aren't that close to me. Also I'm not typing constantly. I haven't tried the MX browns, but if you work in an office you may want to go with that I"m sure they feel great too.

    A note on programability:
This keyboard offers 3 layers of programmable keys similar to the Pok3r. However, you have to cycle through the layers, vs the Pok3r where you could skip to layer 2 or 4 etc and then switch back to normal layout. I don't use the programming feature of this keyboard because for me it has all the functionality I need, vs. the Pok3r, which I needed to program so I could jump between layers for use of arrow keys or function row. So it's not a downside for me, but if you need to program the layers for some reason and want to jump around, you'll have to cycle through the layers.

I really love typing on this keyboard. It was my first mechanical keyboard, and I'm pretty stoked with the choice. It only gets 4 stars because of two specific issues that are really design choices the manufacturer made; I'll get to those later.

    1. Very heavy and sturdy; nice rubber feet.
    2. Blue switches I got feel great, sound so satisfying; they are LOUD. Don't get this with blue switches if you sit next to someone... they will despise you unless they are also a mechanical keyboard lover.
    3. The feel of the keycaps is so silky while being textured; it's something you just have to feel for yourself.

    Now, the bad stuff.

While the board is fully programmable, there are a couple of caveats that ruined my plans to program it. Firstly, it seems that it's not possible to move the Fn key. By default, it's a downward stretch of your right pinky, one key away from the space bar. I wanted to put it where the caps lock key (AKA as the useless, annoying key) is... it seems that I can't do that. I also wanted to map the I, J, K, L keys to be an arrow cluster when holding the Fn key... I can't do that either. Apparently Fn L is reserved for Linux mode, but I can't really get it to work... but either way, that key ignores programming with the Fn key.

    -------------------------
Edit: The latest firmware actually fixes both of the above issues. The Caps Lock key can now be mapped to Fn and the IJKL can now be combined with Fn as arrow keys.
    -------------------------

The other design choice made is the 1.5 U width delete and esc keys (which I love). They are great and the larger surface is cool, but it also means that you can't use any standard keycap sets that replace those keys. I suppose the esc key is easy... just use the sweet red one it comes with as an option... but the delete key is trickier.

I now have an Anne Pro at the office and I ordered a White Fox back when I first saw it. Will I get rid of this one in the future? I doubt it. It's got F keys, it has arrow keys, feels amazing, and looks bad ass. Even with the above issues (most of which can be fixed in firmware) I still love it.

I adore this keyboard! As a web developer who mostly works on Macs, it's always tough to find high end keyboards that work easily with MacOS. But this one, with the updated BIOS, works perfectly. The feel of typing on this board is excellent, though if you're used to a gaming keyboard, you may find yourself not pressing the keys far enough in to register. That being said, it took me about a week to get used to the less forgiving but ultimately more rewarding clickity-clack of this keyboard.

Can't recommend this keyboard enough! Though, I'd be hesitant to recommend it for serious gaming. You'd be better off going with a dedicated gaming keyboard with softer switches if you play competitively.
