Magaloni's book takes a levelheaded view of authoritarian regimes and how they utilize democratic institutions. She dismisses the idea that elections and political parties are simply fig leafs to give the regime legitimacy. Instead, she provides rational and compelling explanations for why a dictator would actually benefit from establishing democratic institutions. Definitely worth a read for scholars of political institutions and authoritarianism.
