I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Slocum writes an engaging tale of a commercial voyage to Brazil that he made, as captain, with his wife and two children. You know from the beginning that the story does not end too badly because the main character (Slocum) lives to tell it. But, there are storms and shipwrecks, fevers and quarantines, mutinous crews and pettish port authorities, not too mention, a revolution Thorough it all, Slocum makes things go right. There are wonderful vignettes involving people they met along the way as well as pleasant descriptions of the ports at which they stopped. In the end, their young son hops from their "canoe," the Liberdade, to the pier in the Potomac Basin in Washington DC--the end of their voyage.

Starting in 1944 I WAS a sailor! I read Joshua Slocum's "Sailing Alone Around the World."
For more than 20 years I was a professional sailing vessel captain, a very early member of the Virgin Island Yacht fleet. For a short time a fellow Captain in our group was Joshua's granddaughter Kitty Slocum. Imbued with a little of the family history, when I found Voyage of the Liberdade I HAD to read it. The language is archaic though thoroughly enjoyable. The story? I wish I could have been with them.

I read both this book and his journey single-handed around the world. Amazing! The guy is a top notch seaman and handyman it seems; he also kills 2 men on this book. Lol. Even though he was an avid sailor, I found it curious that he did NOT know how to swim...attributed partly in this book by fear of sharks. I mean, really??? I love the writing style and annotations; full of insight for those new to sailing. I only dream one day to be able to sail off and explore the world. My sea skills somewhat lacking BUT knowing how to swim well, I recommend this book for those looking for a dose of adventure from their comfy living room. :)

Voicing for the audible was a little difficult to understand at times due to the inflection of the readers voice, content was good.

This book is fantastic at it it speaks of real experiences from the real world and a real captain of which I have great respect for! Many of the places he has gone, so I have I ! I find the true adventures intriguing, speaking of the old English and spelling and the old English ways and honor!

Shipwrecked in Brazil, Joshua Slocum builds a boat that gets him and his family back to the US.
This is before he sails around the world, alone, in a small boat; thei first man to do so.

No sniveling, whining, more complaining from this hearty sailor. Just hunker down and get the job done seeing the best and laughing at the worst. Every man who has ever served in our military in wartime would feel comfortable sharing a foxhole with this guy. He would make a heavy pack seem light and show you how to laugh at the weather.

Good read, good guy, good experience.

Um grande livro, só lamento o fato de não haver uma tradução, para o português deste magnifico documento, pois jovens e crianças poderiam também curtir esta leitura, ate mesmo se a opção falada, fosse comercializada, seria deveras prazerosa!

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure on the high seas
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 2, 2016
This story of high adventure on the seas would have been a great work of fiction but remarkably,it is a true story of victory over adversity. The writing style is so compelling it is hard to put down. I enjoyed his turn of phrase and his use of words and nautical terms some of which have fallen out of common use. It was handy to read his account of heroism on the kindle app so that unfamiliar words could be looked up at a touch. This is a humble account from perhaps the most famous sailor of all time with not a word wasted. It is so dense with adventure, I look forward to reading it again, with a chart to follow his progress.
