the work at Sutton Hoo was found just before the war, and had to be delayed till after the war [WW2]. it was an enormous burial mound in the eastern most part of the UK, and whose it was is really still unknown. What we found out, was that the "dark ages" was replete with lovely art, artifacts, and craftsmanship. This was a ship burial, any book on it is well worth reading.
