Starring Bette Davis, Paul Henreid and Claude Rains, "Now, Voyager" was for me a strangely liberating experience. In its time the movie was known as a "weepie," or a "woman's movie." Such has our culture changed, however, that seeing it for the first time now made me, perhaps, see it differently from the way men might have seen it in 1942. I found myself actively disliking all the men in the movie (and Bette's mother, who is much more like a tyrannical father than a mother) and identifying instead with Bette Davis. The men in the movie want to take over the woman's voice. They want to speak her innermost thoughts for her, not understanding how radically wrong they might be. Paul Henreid, who is magnificent in a role that men in the 1940s and 1950s must have thought was one of an infinitely patient and suffering but noble husband (of another woman in the movie, not Bette), is on current viewing the most extreme kind of villain just because he's so damn smooth. With sincere "nobility" at the end he says to Bette that she should be free to marry "some man who will make you happy." Self-sacrifice on his part? No, he thinks SHE is the one who will be undergoing self-sacrifice if she doesn't get married! He says to her, when it is clear that he has made up his mind to go back to his wife and Bette will probably remain a spinster and bring up his daughter, "No self-respecting man would allow such self-sacrifice as yours to go on indefinitely." And I'm sure that male viewers in past decades would think, "yes, his greatest concern is indeed for her." But Bette isn't buying. In the movie she responds, "That is the most conventional, pretentious, pious speech I ever heard in my life. I simply don't know you."

I understand why this unique film has been called one of the greatest, and most unexpected, movies ever to come out of Hollywood. Professor Cavell writes of the films he discusses in his book "Contesting Tears": "There is surely a sense of sacrifice in this group of films; they solicit our tears. But is it that the women in them are sacrificing themselves to the sad necessities of a world they are forced to accept? Or isn't it rather that the women are claiming the right to judge a world as second-rate that enforces this sacrifice; to refuse, transcend, its proposal of second-rate sadness?"

I found this movie quite by accident on TV, and I fell in love with it! I had to buy it, and have a copy of my very own! It is one of the most tender, and profound, heartrending love storys, that I have ever seen! Eventhough, the movie was in black and white, I didn't care, It was outstanding!

This movie is about a woman named Charlotte, who was a overweight ugly ducking, who became a beautiful woman, in spite of the fact, that Charlotte had a very overbearing, hateful mother.
A kind doctor helped Charlotte with her sadness, and Charlotte ended up going on a vacation, on a cruise ship, there Charlotte met and fell in love with a very handsome man named Jerry, but Jerry was a married man, but he was still, so in love with Charlotte! And Charlotte was so in love with him, she was in love for the first time in her life!

(Betty Davis) who played Charlotte, and (Paul Henreid) who played Jerry, was awesome!I loved the chemisty between them, you could almost feel the overpowering love, that they felt for each other in this movie!
One of my favorite scenes is when Jerry tells Charlotte, "If only I was free, there would be only one thing that I would want to do, and that would be to prove that you are not immune to happiness!" I'd show you, that you deserve to be loved!" And I liked the way Jerry lit two cigarettes, at the same time!

I loved the beautiful, soul stirring music of Max Steiner! Wow! I LOVED the scene at the end of the movie where Jerry tells Charlotte, after they talked, to let's have a cigarette on it, and then the way Jerry lit two cigarettes, and looked at Charlotte, with his beautiful self! Oh! My! For some reason to me, that was one of the most sexy, profound, loving, romantic moments in a movie that I have ever seen, when Jerry and Charlotte was smoking they looked like they were actually speaking to each other, and yet for that brief moment they did not speak no words; you could feel and see all this intense emotion, and love! I highly recommend this movie! Simply Awesome! They don't make movies like this anymore, Oh, how I wished that they did!

I was so glad to have the opportunity to see this movie and after I did, I had to purchase a copy on dvd, because it has become one of my favorites, and never before have I so realized how much a favorite actress Bette Davis is to me, having see this one, as well as her in All about Eve, and The man who came to dinner. Just last night I watched her in the Bride came COD with James Cagney, and had a lot of fun! Now Voyager is movie that really sheds some light on some of the human experiences like what its like to be an unwanted child with a resentful mother, or a child that can't please a demanding mother, and how hard it is just to talk to each other and really listen! I like the part especially when the "doctor" says to the old Mother, "Children have rights too!" Its quite a well written and thought out story. Happy to have it in my video library at last! I think everyone should see it. Its all good!

Charlotte finds her inner strength. For a 40s movie, it's pretty darn progressive: OK to undergo psychotherapy; the doctor pushes her out of the nest when he knows she's ready; Charlotte doesn't have to marry a man to be validated. Bette Davis is wonderful, Paul Henreid is virile and strong.

Wonderful script, well played, encouraging for The Unsure. I guess my only complaint is "lose the glasses." Those seem to be a symbol of awkwardness/being less than attractive.

Un des grands films d'avant la 2+ Guerre mondiale. Puissantes émotions dans une atmosphère morale osée (pour Hollywood) malgré quelques stéréotypes. Bette Davis est une superbe actrice, jouant son personnage à trois âges différents.
