In addition, since it had been several years, I decided to read through the book before handing it over to her. It was such a pleasure to remember how much FUN this story is to read! You follow the adventures of a young boy who sees the doctor's adventures through his own eyes, so it's perfect for a child to read. I know my daughter will love it!
Now I am SHOCKED at the amount of racism and bigotry. Black and Red people a described as simple, stupid, lazy good for nothing and uncivilized.
At the time I didn't realize that. I don't I know it made any impression on my thinking at the time, I don't think it did because I was amazed when I was reading it now.
It even included the ''n'' word. I would NOT recommend the.book for any child.
Perhaps for an adult studying how things were then (when these books were written) and now.
Hugh Lofting's imagination allows us to talk with and learn from animals. Though a children's book and easy reading (maybe even aloud to your family?) the conversations and animal perspectives are intriguing and insightful. I've been reading the series with my teenage son and we have very much enjoyed the adventures and the many ways which the animals are extremely helpful to Doctor Doolittle and vice versa.
The doctor found himself King of an island and grew more detpressed. He felt obligated to function as a real king. But he is at heart a naturalist. Sneeking away to ride the great clear snail to take the doctor's party. After traveling, finding a stowaway, grand larcently the ship broke during s storm.
It is an incredible example, though I had a little trouble suspend disbelief.
But I recommend this to any age readers.

Annoyed, however, that the book was clearly second-hand, while sold as new.
