The Voyeur Next Door is... Something I can't even find words to describe. There are scenes in the book that can only be described with expletives! It's definitely a book that leaves you brain-numb from the shere awesomeness of it. That... and those steamy scenes that create the need for a cold shower! Airicka can definitely write some hot scenes! But there was also humor, a touch of sadness, & a bit of heart warming also. All of that coupled with the fact Airicka has a way of writing that really draws you into the story, makes for an amazing book. Being the first book by her I've read, I wasn't sure what to expect and was quite surprised! But definitely not disappointed.

"It all worked fine for me, but I knew it wasn't normal."
*sigh* One of my favorite lines I've read in forever. Maybe because it's the quiet, accepting way Ali says it, realizing she is different. Maybe it's the heartbreaking way she is outside, looking in, with her neighbors, the people on the street, her family. She is disconnected, yet when an elderly man dropped his groceries, she was the only one who helped him. Little did she know that one decision, that moment of kindness, the overwhelming need to make sure he wasn't as alone as she was, would change her life. Gabriel is struggling. He is pissed at the world, wallowing in his failures. He is trying to run the car repair shop that has been in his family for generations. His grandfather, who raised him, cared for him, is getting older and breaking body parts while being intimate with younger women. All Gabriel knows is the underlying rage and anger, the gut feeling that he can't trust himself, his desires.

Airicka has written a haunting tale that will leave you laughing out loud, wanting to sob and hold the characters close, take a cold shower because oh my greatness it will be steamy! This isn't a quick, spank bank story. It will draw you out, pull out secret desires you didn't realize were lurking under the surface. It's refreshing to have a story where one partner isn't sleeping with anyone/everyone. There isn't an obvious imbalance between Ali/Gabriel. They are two damaged, hurting people with a chance.

This is an amazing read !! It is so hard to find a romance book that you can enjoy the steamy sex and laugh out loud humor all in one. When I started reading this story I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I went in with a totally different idea in my head about how this book would be and ended up getting my mind blown. This is my first read by Airicka Phoenix but it will not be my last. The writing in the story was perfect and the story-line flowed perfect. I will be recommending this book to friends.

*******I received this book in exchange for my honest review*******

Let me start my review off by saying this was the best book I have read so far this year! This book was epic, from the witty, funny, and captivating characters, to the plot-line that was well-written and unique. I honestly haven't read any books from this author, expect for this one, and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long! You know how, when you meet a person and their personality speaks to you and you become best friends? Well, this is how I felt about this author's writing. It just spoke to me and my personality.

By the way, I have claimed the main character of this book, Ali, as my spirit animal. She's mine people! LOL

Gosh, I loved everything about this book and it's one of my all-time favorite books. EVER! I love books that can make me laugh, cry, and feel all these amazing emotions. When the characters feel like real people, I know I'll never forget a book. Ali and Gabriel felt like family. Like I have known them all their life and was seeing their love story blossom before my eyes. I love that their relationship wasn't easy. That it was complicated and messy. I love Insta-love, don't get me wrong, but sometimes I need to read a good book where the characters hate each other upon first sight and grow to love each other. It's, not only funny to read what they think of each other, but it also shows you their transformation from being enemies, to lovers.

My advice to you? Get this book. Please, please get this book! You will not be disappointed because this book phenomenal and this author knows how to draw all these emotions out of you. Not to mention, the writing style is unique and the characters are likable in their own way.

The first few chapters of this book are definitely reminiscent of the kink and quirk one might find in a Charlotte Stein or Mary Ann Rivers book, but soon it veers into a more traditional romance. It also takes a cue card from some recent cable TV shows where all the nudity and heat are in the premier episode and then there is a slow simmer. Airicka Phoenix is awfully talented at writing the slow simmer.

"The anonymity is what gets us hot."

Protagonist Ali is geeky, introverted, repressed....and quick-witted, kind-hearted, and curious. I liked her in the beginning and continued to like her as her inhibitions relaxed and the story unfolded. It was refreshing that there was not a personality/background info dump in the first 10% of the book, and I luxuriated in discovering key things about the personal histories of the romantic couple halfway into the novel.

Lumberjack-sized Gabriel is harder to snuggle up to since he is mean and bull-headed. "And in that moment I realized something; she made me feel young and not in a good way. She made me feel childish and petty. I wanted to stick my tongue out at her and that was just mortifying." At least Gabriel owned his pig-headedness. Conversely, I loved how the possessiveness of his behavior regarding Ali hits him so suddenly and at inopportune times. Those moments were some of the best scenes in the book.

Traditional side characters framed in decidedly non-traditional accoutrements enhanced my reading enjoyment. In addition, influences of the side characters (mainly Earl and Tammy) move the relationship between Ali and Gabriel forward in meaningful spurts. They also add the only tension plot points.
