Seems light for cast iron

I like this apple peeler all right. It's the first one I've ever used so I have no experience with other peelers to compare it. The person who said it works best for small, hard apples was spot on. But that is the kind of apples I've been using. They're "cooking apples" from a very old tree on our place. So this peeler is what I needed for those. I did try a red delicious just to see how it would do and it was not a success. I ended up with apple sauce and a few slices. It's not heavy at all. I had imagined that it would be since it is cast iron. And as others have commented, the suction doesn't always hold well. It does do better if you mount the peeler to a smooth, slightly wet surface. And I hold the base of the peeler with one hand while turning the handle with the other. All in all, it has been a satisfactory peeler for me considering the price. I would buy it again.

After I wrote my review I was contacted by the seller and sent a new gadget/machine, which was very helpful of them. This one works better. In fact, when all the stars are aligned it is wonderful. But it's a pretty big "when". If the apple is unbalanced the prongs lose their grip on the apple and you are then forced to either take it off the machine and peel, core, slice it the way you did before you had the machine or you must hand rotate the apple through the machine. This last is dangerous. There are 2 very sharp blades and 4 sharp prongs and if the suction base gives out you might find yourself in a bloody situation. How often does this happen? More than I would like. I just put 8 apples through the process and 2 of them required my intervention. If you only use it on well balanced apples you won't have a problem.

I try to write positive reviews of products and companies that please me because it's always easier to complain. In this case I contacted the manufacturer first to see whether they would help. Nope. First of all, as many people have noted, the unit does not come with an instruction manual. It is simple looking, but there are a couple of adjustments that are required to get the proper peel and to either slice or not slice the apple. I found the information in a YouTube video NOT made by the company. OK, fine, I got the information and I used the product. It worked until a piece broke off on my third use and the suction base stopped working. Now I have to hold the peel part against the apple manually, while also applying downward pressure to the contraption to keep it stable (since the vacuum suction base no longer works). I told all this to the company and what I got in reply was an electronic version of the instruction manual. They did not in any way address my problems with the broken part or the non-functioning suction base. Too bad, because this is a gadget that could save me a lot of time since I am a professional cook and use a lot of apples. Back to the paring knife.

I love the idea of this product because I make applesauce every year and it is a pain to peel and core and slice all the apples. Since this is the first apple machine I have used, I am not sure if the issues I experienced are typical or not. First of all, there are no directions included with it. I actually had to look up a video on youtube because my engineer husband and I could not figure it out just by looking at it. Then we tried to use it and we found we need to continually adjust the part that peels the apple because it has the tendency to over-peel and start peeling the flesh. We also need to put pressure on the handle because the machine will not move forward like it should. I have tried to use it two times and have had different issues both times. It is such a time saver, though, that I will keep messing with it and I am glad I bought it.

This peeler is made very well and should hold up to a lot of usage. It has a large suction cup on the bottom that holds it securely in place when being used. I put it on my stove and counter top both worked fine ( both smooth surfaces ) . I seen some reviews of people complaining that it wouldn't "stick" it may have been the surface they were using and not the peeler itself. The only issue i had was trying to get the blade adjusted right so it was just peeling and not taking lot of the apple away with the peel. There is no instructions with it so i just tried to figure it out but couldn't quite get it right as ill show in the picture. Its just user error and i see that most reviews show that it peels fine i just need to figure mine out. It cores great and easy to clean and store. Fun to use and makes canning or baking with apples or potatoes much easier.

This is a tough one to review. Here is why.

Pros: It was much faster than doing it by hand. I was able to do 87 apples in about 1.5 hours. I can usually only do 30 per hour by hand. I also wasn't as worn out as when I do them by hand so it was essentially easier on my body.

Cons: The spring was much too tight. To the point where it was removing the vast majority of the apple. I adjusted the blade to the shallowest cut and it was just too much pressure and just cutting too deeply. So I removed the spring and turned the handle with one hand and used my other hand to apply the blade to the apple. This worked quite well. Secondly the coring and slicing tool is attached to the unit with a wing nut. It comes loose every 10 apples or so and you have to adjust it. I may be upgrading the wing nut to a lock waster and nut.

So overall it did a good job for me because I've never done that many apples in one shot before but I had to remove the spring and do it sort of manual.
