This album lacks the unfiltered passion of their self-titled debut, the experimentation of 'In Love', the polish of 'Lies', and the unafraid, unapologetic approach tracks like 'Back of Your Mouth' brought from 'Shallow Believer'.
The Used again reinvented themselves with 'Artwork', but 'Vulnerable' feels like a watered down continuation of that process. They seem to experiment with some contemporary elements - mostly dubstep backings on several tracks - but fail to really break away from sounding overly formulaic and over-produced.
Where is the relate-able storytelling like 'Buried Myself Alive'? The not-afraid-of-bass 'I'm a Fake? Even 'Artwork', their most criticized offering, manages to give us a more mature and evolved sound. 'Vulnerable' leaves me wanting more - more complexity, more experimentation, more interesting music. Instead, I'm given what essentially sounds like very similar but watered down versions to songs we've already heard.
Hugely disappointing - I have been a fan for quite a while and very much enjoyed their evolution as musicians. Looking forward to their rebound, if it occurs.
