Well, it is not often that we actually read the little booklet that comes with Nintendo DS games but in this case we carefully scanned the pages. We were trying to figure out how you teach Wappy to move around and play.

It turns out Wappy can "Sit!" really well. Wappy does not move from point A to point B. Wappy can make a lot of different sounds. Wappy lights up in different ways. Wappy can turn his/her head. Also Wappy can stretch and return to "Sit!". You can pet the dog on the back, nose and tail and the dog will respond.

When I think robot dog, I conjure images of .... more. At least frontwards and backwards. Maybe a circle. The DS has to stay within 3 feet or so of the dog so perhaps it is just as well that Wappy stays put.

The DS end of the toy is fun. The mini games are fun. The Nintendog concepts of grooming and caring for the dog are fun. These are all things you can do with any of the Nintendogs games. All the Nintendog games were hits in our home over the years. My son's assesment of Wappy compared to Nintendogs was that Nintendogs was more like having a real dog.

The batteries do NOT come with. 3 AA.

I think Pre-K to 2nd grade will love the toy. I think a very small child would love the dog but wouldn't be able to navigate the DS game. I'd be surprised if older kids who can work the DS will stay interested in the dog for long. My son is way too old for this toy but it took him about 5 minutes to get involved with the mini games, leaving Wappy to turn itself off and go to sleep.

The dog seems sturdy and put together really well. I think it would appeal to both boys and girls in the pre-k to 2nd grade range.

When you look at the developer and publisher of this game, you might be wondering why Sega Toys is working with Activision rather than well, Sega - their parent company. Well, truth be told, there is precedent behind this unexpected alliance. We've seen it before with Bakugan Battle Brawlers and the subsequent games based on Sega Toys' most famous product. Now the two have teamed up again to take on the virtual pet genre of video gaming. Sure virtual pets started with Tamagotchis in the mid 1990s, but it was NIntendogs back in 2005 that really proved the concept could be a billion dollar franchise. Since then we've seen everything from Purr Palls to Cesar Millan's The Dog Whisperer. Heck, even Nintendo went back to the well recently with Nintendogs and Cats, so with literally dozens of games based around rearing virtual pets, what can someone possibly do to stand amongst the pack?

Well, in the case of Wappy Dog, You pair the pet sim up with a robot dog that is used in conjunction with the video game to (hopefully) create a whole new spin on the genre and a more interactive experience. So were Sega Toys and Activision a winning pair yet again, or are video game stores going to have to hold adoption events for stacks of leftover Wappys?

Let's Review

1. Modes

There really isn't a story behind Wappy Dog per say. He's just a virtual pet for you to interact with. The more you play with it, the more the friendship bar fills in. Once you fill in the bar, you gain a heart and Wappy "levels up" more or less. In game it says he's aged a year (which is a bit silly to see a dog age three years in a day) but it really should be labeled something akin to "friendship rank.

Wappydog's face has a gentle inquisitive expression.
His sweet looking features would bring a smile to most anyone.
This toy seems well built to stand the playfulness of a child.

Wappy can be played with by itself or with Nitendo DS.
By itself he has a limited amount of movements.
When you press Wappy's nose he barks and moves up and down one time.
When you pet his back or move his tail, he does pretty much the same thing.
However, these reactions change depending on his mood and his age.
If you press and hold his nose for three or more seconds he'll lie down and go to sleep.
He makes a variety of sounds likes a puppy winning or small bark.
There is an on/off switch under his chin.

Wappy has quite a LOT of functions when interacting with DS.
And those actions change Wappy's personality over time.

This is a great little fun toy that adds a new dimension to Nintendo's video games.
This particular Wappy was a gift for a girl that dearly loves animals,
She was VERY pleased and excited to play with Wappy, and loves the DS.

The box contains:
Wappydog which requires 3 AA batteries, that are NOT included.
The Nintendo DS card.
Instructions and precautions booklet.
Two pages of personel care decals that include:
paw prints, spots, collar's, a bandanna & bow and some flowers.

My animal-loving, 9 yr. old daughter likes this game with some reservations. She really enjoyed customizing the toy dog with stickers. There are different colored spots, flowers, paw prints & neck accessory stickers to choose from (big spot for around eye does not affix correctly-two swipes with an exacto blade solved the problem, so it's laying down pretty good, now).

The robotic dog lights up its eyes and cheeks and slowly raises up and down on front paws with an occasional head turn. There's a little intermittent barking, but nothing too annoying. It's pretty low-key, overall. Wappy seems more like a sweet, decorative tech. companion rather than a highly interactive plaything.

Regarding the actual DS game, my daughter also liked that you could re-name the dog. Unfortunately, it only calls the dog by its new name when you request to call it by that new name-every other time it still calls the dog "Wappy," which she wasn't too happy about.

You can virtually "pet" and "groom" Wappy, blow bubbles at her and have her get caught in the rainbow beam of a UFO. Although you can take her to different rooms, you can't walk her around them. In short, you can't control Wappy's movements which is another downside for older children.

You can play various games to unlock additional rooms, toys and foods (beef, chicken, ice cream and cake) for Wappy to enjoy. These games include swiping away snowmen in a penguin's path, catching fruit falling out of trees with a picnic basket, bopping critters with a hammer (like in arcade) and hitting floating disks with a slingshot.

This game is VERY high on the cute factor. I appreciate that the content is appropriate for very young children. It comes nicely packaged in a see-through box that fully displays the adorable Wappy.

Wappy would be especially loved by little girls ages 5-8, depending on maturity level.
