The story is intricate and very engaging. Zoe is not at all like Lynx. She is very introvert and a scientist. I liked the fact that Gage and Zoe have been seeing each other for six months already. It was not really a romantic story, more suspense.
That is actually not my favorite genre, but I like the intelligence of Fiona Quinn's stories.
The Lynx series is one of my favorites, but in 4 books you can tell a more elaborate story so a comparison would not be fair.
Zoe is a scientist who lives in her head. To the world, she appears to be a shy, introverted woman. To those who know her, she is a strong and self contained entity who requires no one else to complete her.
Zoe has invented technology that can be used to help law-enforcement and military to target only the guilty at a crime scene. She is also a specialist in micro robotics and has developed an invention that could, in the wrong hands, disrupt entire nations.
Someone wants that technology in a bad way. Enough to murder and kidnap.
Gage is a Marine and Zoe's "friend with benefits." The opening scene of this novel introduces both characters with a bang as Zoe is embroiled in a life and death struggle which leads to an international intrigue that pits the FBI, the CIA, an apparently foreign agency and the military up against each other.
Who can be trusted?
Gage enlists the aid of a friend in Iniquus, a paramilitary agency that contracts with the United States government. They rescue Zoe from being kidnapped by those who would have forced her to develop technology that goes against every ethical standard she holds dear.
As the story progresses, Zoe, like an onion, is unpeeled and we find a top secret scientist with unshakeable ethics but a naive world view.
There are powers at work with the ability to use secret surveillance technologies to get what and who they want.
Fiona Quinn, is skilled at taking a plot line and convoluting it so that you never see the ending coming.
In the novel, we discover the relationship between Special Operator Gage and Zoe, a ‘lab tech’, who is the centre of his life. Although, in the spirit of her other novels, Quinn doesn’t let this become a simple romance novel. Her habitual elements of a tightly woven thriller are ever-present. First, we discover that Zoe’s job is something far more complex than Gage imagined and from then things just become frenetic and deadly. Her heroine from the Lynx series even puts in a stellar guest appearance. The plot is complex with red herrings strewn for the unwary, and the characters superbly drawn.
Fans of Fiona Quinn’s action romance thrillers are going to love this one. Prepare for a fast-paced ride that will keep you up until the early hours as you turn the pages. In my opinion, it is her best yet!
The story is about Zoe Kealoha. She is a military research scientist working on saving numerous lives with her research. She is caught totally off-guard when a group of masked men force their way inside her apartment. Zoe is able to quickly hide and hear them talk about her. When she hears Gage, "a friend with benefits" walks in on the invaders... who are tossing the apartment looking for her. He shocks the daylights out of Zoe by dealing with them rough and quick. He is a member of an elite unit and will do anything to keep Zoe safe.
