Give me WD-40 and Duct Tape: problem solved
Highly recommend for anyone who uses WD-40 often.
just use some old spray bottles if they quit working just use another one. Or 1$ spray bottles from dollar general, dollarstore, etc. Or use paint brushes to apply the WD40 It will last longer using brushes.
I discovered WD-40 purportedly dissolved this stuff. I tested it w my household can and while it took 4 applications & wipes then repeating for each square foot , I got every last bit of it off the Jeep. It took me 5 consecutive weekends and 2 gallons of WD-40.
I also used soft brush , large sponge , a dishwashing mit , 3m odor & vapor blocking masks and 1 Dupont hazmat suit . Countless sheets of Amazon packing paper I'd saved for absorbing such fluids also came in handy. I hope no other human has to go thru such an ordeal but, if you do , & you need industrial size clean up of bitumen off of an automobile thanks to your local , inbred, spiteful , imbecilic DOT employees not doing their job correctly well, WD-40 can help you make it thru such an occurrence.
When I saw the great price on this at Amazon I jumped on it immediately but it wasn't until after using it a few times I began to suspect it wasn't doing the job quite as well. It wasn't until after that I noticed the "California Compliant" in the title (edit: I now see that Amazon has removed it from the title and added a note stating "Low VOC formula available in CA only" to the description). I originally posted a question here asking if anyone else who bought it was aware of any differences to which only one responded as of yet stating that it was "just the same", however after others I ride with agreed with me the stuff I was spraying seemed different than theirs (the first thing we noticed is this stuff does not seem to wipe off dried clumps of mud off as easily / thoroughly or leave a dry to the touch shine as fast) I began to look into it further.
As it turns out this CA version is a low VOC (volatile organic compound) formula as required since Jan 2014 per California Air Resources Board regulations. This product is not the same, and that probably explains why this CA Compliant version is about 1/2 price of the real stuff. WD-40 100102 Heavy Duty Gallon Can (Pack of 1)
While the exact formula is a trade secret, according to the SDS sheets at wd40company.com the reg formula contains Aliphatic Hydrocarbon (45-50%), Petroleum Base Oil (<35%) and LVP Aliphatic Hydrocarbon (12-18%).
This CA Compliant version contains LVP Aliphatic Hydrocarbon (45-50%), Aliphatic Hydrocarbon (<25%), Petroleum Base Oil (<25%), and "Non-Hazardous Ingredients" (10%).
I have found no source documenting by exactly how much the different formulas might play in product effectiveness, but given that this CA Compliant version is cheaper and only sold in CA it's probably a safe assumption that it is not as effective (doesn't seem to be in my case for my uses) but probably is a bit safer for your health especially for those who might incur repeat and prolonged exposure.
All in all, seeing that it does seem to perform the same job nearly as well and as long as it's still going for around half the price I suspect this won't be the last gallon of 'CA Compliant WD-40 I buy.
