But we really wanted to have the TV off the floor for Thanksgiving, so we tried to put it together against our better judgment. The outer sides, top, and bottom seemed solid enough, so we figured they'd be enough to make up for the really cheap MDF inner shelves.
The assembly was a trip. Several dowel holes were too big, so the dowels slid all the way in when inserted. Had to fish them out with tiny pliers and insert them halfway with lots of glue. Had to drill all new pilot holes in the back (dozens of screws) because they'd been drilled in the wrong places (they'd actually been drilled more than once, like they knew they'd messed up. They got them wrong both times.). A couple of large holes were drilled at the wrong angle, so the sides couldn't align no matter how we tried. Then four mag bolts broke while we were installing - and I'm not that strong with a screwdriver. They simply came apart when tightened normally. While we were assembling, we noticed several other places where the pilot holes were drilled too deep, making the veneer on the opposite side bow outward and crack.
At this point, we'd put so much effort in that we figured we'd just see if we could make it work and replace it when we could. So we finished as best we could and went to attach the doors. Of course, they wouldn't open/close properly. We assume the faulty alignment meant the doors couldn't sit square. In any case, the left door slid constantly toward the center, and the right door wouldn't open all the way. With all the flaws and awful quality, there was just no way we could talk ourselves into living with this console.
On the plus side, the instructions were pretty clear and we did get all the parts we needed. They include extras of some supplies, in fact, so they must be used to people breaking mag bolts. But I disassembled in a fraction of the time it took to try to get this awful piece together. Save yourself the headache and buy something else.
Following the instructions, I inspected all the parts prior to assemble. The top surface board was damaged at the corner along with a couple of the thin backing boards. Although the packaging appear adequate it appears the fault was mainly with the shipping company. However the package is very large and heavy (124 lbs.). It would be better to ship these in multiple boxes but I can only imagine the logistics nightmare to keep multiple boxes together and shipped at the same time.
Amazon was great repairing the damage. They sent out a replacement stand allowing me to take the best parts from the two packages and then return the stand with the damaged items. Actually both shipments had damaged items, but was lucky no duplicate items were damage in both shipments. A downfall for the returns is if you return this, you must take it to a local UPS store, they will not pick it up for you (heavy and large). If you receive this product and don't like it and simply want to return it, there is a 20% restocking charge on the price paid (at time of review).
As expected, all the material is made up of an epoxied sawdust type material with a laminate surface. The only exception are a few pieces of solid wood for shelf support. Some of the hardware parts are not a good quality. I broke a few CAM locks with very little effort while assembling the product. The shelving units are not large enough for most electronics (about an 1" too short). It's unfortunate, but I could not locate the dimensions of each shelving on Amazon's site nor the manufacture's site.
Putting the pieces together took about 2 hours, which was very reasonable. Instructions were adequate and I did all the assembling by myself so it wasn't too bad. There were no extra screws or other locking materials so if you lose or break one you'll be out of luck. The sliding door mechanism appears to be a little weak and the doors don't close all the way to the left of right due to the roller locations so it leaves a small gap in both ends. Again not a big deal.
The black finish does look very attractive but the surface is quite susceptible to scratches. Be careful when you turn the top over when putting it together. I suggest placing a table cloth or carpet underneath to prevent damages to the top. Don't make the same mistake that I did.
We're happy so far with the stand and have received quite a bit of complements from our friends.
