This tournament-size chess set comes complete with chess board, chessmen and a travel canvas bag, and it meets the World Chess Federation's (FIDE) height, weight, and proportions standards for tournament play. The low price makes it ideal for chess clubs, classrooms, and schools that are making chess a part of the curriculum. Staunton style chess pieces in black and cream plastic are the standard in tournament chess, and are a perfect combination of beauty, durability, and low price. Each set of chessmen is made of the best quality plastic and displays exquisite design and workmanship. Set includes 34 chessmen (two extra queens, one of each color). The king is tournament sized at 3.75 inches tall. The pieces are unweighted but are 90% filled with plastic with a collective weight of approximately 1 lb. which gives them stability than hollow pieces. Green felted bottoms help them glide across the board with ease.
The tournament-size chess mat measures 19.75 inches with 2.25 inch squares. The vinyl roll-up board is green and buff and includes algebraic notation for game analysis. We recommend the board remain flat or rolled-up when not in use to prevent creases that can occur when folded. The more it is used, the better it will lie flat during play. If the edges curl up, just lie it flat in the opposite direction to get it flat. The board can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
The traditional chess carry-bag with zipper conveniently stores the roll-up board and all 34 chessmen inside.

The pieces can definitely handle some rough speed chess, and the board requires very little cleaning. The bag requires very little cleaning and is quite durable. It can hold a few small things including a chess clock. When I'm riding the subway with it I'll catch people staring at the bag wondering what it is. A pool cue? gun? set of knives? If someone looks really confused I will turn the bag over so they can see the word CHESS written on it. They almost always laugh, and smile at me.
Some are black, some are white.
The pieces, I mean, and the board I guess too.
I would buy this one again, if I were you.
This set is single weighted, so durable; and I would recommend it, but it is not solid plastic: it is hollowed a little on the bottom. Still durable, very usable and better than what you will get at any department store. This set is similar to any single-weighted set you would get from the US Chess Federation [...]
For kids, I prefer single-weighted to triple-weighted pieces as I have seen triple-weighted break more often than single weighted (the weight on the bottom of the triple-weighted sometimes comes out, and the top sometimes breaks from children's rough handling).
In the meantime, i am still looking for another solid plastic set...
Pros: Staunton style pieces that are of good size and it comes with one extra queen for each side.
The board has algebriac notation along all four sides. I played one some of the other players boards
which only had markings on two of the sides and it was pretty annoying to have read the letters and
numbers upside down. This board does not have that problem.
Great clock holder pocket inside as well as room for pens and paper
Cons: The biggest con is that the pieces are not weighted and so, felt a little cheap. I don't think that this is too important, however. I prefer a heavily weighted piece and play on such at home. On the go, weight just bogs you down. I played against a really young 1750 player who had weighted pieces and they were falling apart, with the weights always trying to fall out the bottom. I was intimidated by his aged set but not envious of it, if you know what I mean.
Overall: Great tournament set that is easy to carry and use. Pairs great with the Excalibur game clock, also on amazon.
