Top Customer Reviews
The WEEDO M2 arrived in a large box to accommodate all the packing needed to keep it safe during shipping. There was a printed guide sitting on top of the printer to guide the unpacking and setup. The machine axis’ and extruder head were very well constrained with tie downs and temporary brackets that need to be removed. That process went very quickly and I was printing test sample from the enclosed SD memory card within 20 minutes.
Prior to the first print, I went through the “leveling” process to make sure the extruder axis’ is properly oriented to the flatness of the print platform. The M2 uses a three point adjustment system. This is good engineering. There is a function on the LCD control panel that quickly walks you through the leveling process. I was amazed at how easy this was compared to my previous experience. Filament loading was equally easy. These and many other operations and functions are accessible from the LCD front panel controller.
My previous experience with an open frame design caused concerned that the doors on an enclosed system would get in the way. I find this is not the case, they open easily on three sides and the top. Being enclosed really cuts down on the noise. Also the WEEDO M2’s air filtering system seems to cut down on the slight odor created when printing with PLA. The printer is also illuminated internally with LED strips so that it easy to view printing underway.
The Amazon listing for this printer is incomplete. There are some features that should be mentioned. The printing platform is held in place with strong magnets but is removable. This makes changing the masking tape print surface very, very easy. It snaps back into position easily. Also, the extruder carriage has a fan and ducting that is intended to cool the extruded PLA. This is a feature that I know from my Prusa printer experience can significantly improve PLA models. There is a selection in the LCD control panel that allows the fan to be turned off when printing other materials. Unfortunately for some users, the print platform is not heated, therefore printing with ABS may be problematic. I am ok without a heated bed because PLA and PLA+ fit my modeling needs.
The Amazon listing also fails to list all the accessories that are supplied. Included in the box are: an SD card with software and manual, SD to USB card reader, USB cable, a heavy duty filament holder, a full 1Kg. spool of PLA+ filament, a hobby knife with tweezers, some spare cables and an assortment of tools.
I have about 30 hours of print time , not much in terms of longevity of a device like this but I continue to be impressed by the ease of use and accuracy of this printer. I have not had any extruder clogs and the print bed level has been maintained.
Software that comes with the printer include a WEEDO modified version of CURA slicer program. Models are loaded into this program as .stl files. G-code is produced then this code is converted into .X3G files that can be loaded onto an SD card to be run on the printer. This is my preferred workflow. There is no need to tie up a computer to control this printer. The LCD control panel is easy to use and provides sufficient functionality to load and adjust the printing process.
The other software that comes with the printer is Replicator-G modified for WEEDO. With this software you can load the model, slice it and send the .X3G version of G-code commands to the printer via a USB connect. The slicer included with this package is Skeinforge. I am personally not a fan of this slicer, it is way too hard to use. I have installed and used both CURA and Replicator-G on Windows PC system.
Documentation that comes on the SD card in some areas is complete but kind of sketchy in others. There are some pictures that show loading the filament that is incorrect. There is a elongated hole in the upper right corner on the enclosure that the filament is feed through. No big deal when you figure this out. The manual goes into considerable detail on using Cura but no detail on Replicator-G or Skeiforge. The LCD control panel functions are also covered fairly well. Of course, there is Chinese - English translation that ends up with wording that is somewhat strange that you have to wade through and reinterpret.
I took the opportunity to send some technical question to the support team is China. Their response was quick (overnight) and effective. There is a service support team there that wants to help.
To sum this up,. Overall, I am very, very please with this printer. I give it 5 stars. This 3D printer is a steal for the price. Here is a list my pro’s and cons.
Excellent print quality on solid printing hardware.
Low noise and odor
Excellent LCD control panel
Stand alone printing from SD card using Cura
Removable magnetic print platform
Very low cost for the number of features
Print platform is not heated, limiting filament choices
Documentation somewhat incomplete
I will provide an update on reliability after the printer has been used for a few months. Please ask questions.
