Yes, like so many reviewers have stated, the machine will stop spinning if you try to take off too much material. This lathe is designed for people like me that need to develop the skills needed. It keeps people like me from making costly mistakes.
Some have written that the spindle doesn’t turn fast enough. That it bogs down. That’s because they don’t know what they are doing. I initially had the same complaint until my neighbor pointed out that I didn’t have the material seated tight enough on the head stock. Once I took a wooden mallet and tapped the blank until the wood was correctly seated the machine worked like a champ. I’ve turned several wooden bowls (none that I would display here). They look like cr_p. I proudly showed one to my wife and she asked, “What is it?”
Let me give you some advice (my mom often said, “advise is worth what you pay for it.”). Get yourself a set of carbide tools. They’re great.
Overall seems well built, but the locking seems to be a design flaw.
I did try and reach out to them before leaving this review and I have now waited a few weeks but no response.
In short, it is not worth buying this product, you are better off spending a bit more and having a more reliable lathe.
After receiving my broken lathe I photographed the packaging and the damage. I called the customer service number on the box and spoke to a very helpful, professional and overall kind person who
Simply asked my for my amazon order number to verify the purchase. He immediately apologized for the damage and express shipped me everything I needed to repair my lathe for free!!
The customer service from WEN is amazing and I couldn’t have asked for a nicer representative.
The parts arrive in perfect condition and went on the lathe with no issue. My lathe now works like a dream!!!
Thank you WEN!!!
Instructions for set up are pretty clear (wear gloves because everything is coated in lubricant oil), and I set it up on my regular plywood workbench no problem. Start on slow speeds, then ramp it up until you’re getting the right effect with your tools, but it is easy to use and I got really nice results without any instability or problems.
So far I have used mine to turn mallet heads and handles as well as a few minor projects and it has worked fine.
The motor is only 1/3 HP which means it can stall out easily if you load it up. This is a trade off for the price and portability. This also makes it safer for beginners. And is an effective means to encourage you to keep your tools sharp.
For my unit when I flip the switch the motor takes a few seconds to start turning. I am not sure if this is due to the variable speed function or if the control unit is faulty. This is another price trade off and for me isn’t a big deal.
The tailstock will extend slightly, but it doesn’t crank out easily and so is not suited for horizontal drilling. I give the rubber end of the tailstock a whack with a mallet to set it into my work piece before clamping the tailstock down (a not uncommon alternative to cranking it).
As with most lathes it doesn’t come with cutting tools or personal protective gear, other than that it comes with the equipment you need to get started.
With all that it is still a great tool for the price.
