I used this sander to completely sand the rails and floor of my old 14x14 deck. I was able to remove much of the old sealant and take off all of the rough parts. If you do a project like this with old rough wood, do yourself a favor and buy some 36-grit sandpaper. Don't waste your time with 80-grit until you have finished with the 36 grit. If you use the proper grit sandpaper, this tool is powerful enough to get the job done. I ran the sander continuously except to empty the sawdust.
+ Pros: Powerful motor (for under $50) that does not overheat. Seriously, I had absolutely no overheating problems, and I used this tool relentlessly.
- Cons: The vent leading to the dust collecter quickly became clogged. I read the directions to find out how to clean it. The directions said just have it serviced by Wen. Really? Who is going to service a $40 tool? I proceeded to try to take it apart to clean the vent but then realized that there was no way to access the back side of the vent and clean it. That is a serious design flaw. Eventually, I figured out that the only way to clean the vent was to use some long tweezers and pull the junk through. This worked, but it was harder than it should have been. Second, although the dust collector does collect sawdust, the belt sander also throws some of the sawdust right in your face. This is very annoying. I ended up hitting the stay-on button and then turning the sander around and just sanding in reverse. Otherwise, this sander blows dust in your face even when the vent is not clogged and much worse when it is clogged.
The bottom line is that I would return the sander if I paid more for it, but at this price range, I'm keeping it. The motor runs well, I just wish it didn't throw sawdust in your face, and I wish the vent wouldn't be so hard to clean. At this price range, I highly doubt that you will find a better sander. Just turn it around when you sand and use tweezers to clean the vent.
As a DIYer around the house I didn't really have a need for a belt sander. I had been using PORTER-CABLE 382 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander . I started building furniture and the belt sander seemed like a logical purchase. With so many positive reviews I had to give it a shot versus higher priced ones. This is my first newer belt sander, so I have no basis of comparison to other belt sanders. I have only used older, heavier models.
- Great value vs similar, more expensive belt sanders
- Easy to use - putting in sanding belts, emptying dust bag (twist on and off), adjusting tracking
- Dust collection is so-so
- Tracking needs adjusting more frequently than I would like
- No bag or case for storage
- No variable speeds (trade-off is the lower price)
- No adjustable handle (trade-off is the lower price)
- Ear protection! Hearing Protection Ear Muffs (SUPER COMFORTABLE EAR PROTECTION) Reduce Sound by 21DB - Over The Ear - Compact Foldable Design - Perfect for Firearm Shooting, Hunting, Construction, and More!
- I have been using the POWERTEC 3-inch x 21-inch Sanding Belts in various grits.
I have logged about 30 hours of sanding for refinishing a 25' x 15' deck and many small woodworking projects. No issues to report thus far as it still works as well as it did when I first got it. I think it works fine for small to medium sized jobs. For more frequent or heavy duty jobs or for someone looking for more features or power you will have to spend 2-3x more. Overall I'm pleased.
Just zip open your dust bag and put your vacuum hose all the way into bag (over the interior bag support plastic holder)
Then rezip your bag tight around hose with a little duct tape to secure. Works great and eliminates having to always empty the small bag.
rather than the plastic parts I have seen on most of the "low priced" power tools. So I though "what the hey" why not try a WEN Belt Sander. I loved it! The light weight is nice and even running it for 3 hours or more at a time sanding Chainsawed Table Tops it doesn't overhead and the Belts Runs True. Belt changing is easy to use and fast to adjust for True Running. The Dust Bag I first thought must be a joke (the Craftsman didn't have one). Yes it does fill up fast but does get most of the dust, but it is easy too dump and clean. But no dust collection system can get all of the fine dust 3x21 belt sanders produce. My advise, get the WEN, you will not be let down - so don't let the WEN low price scare you away.[[ASIN:B012VQCCRY WEN 4545 6321 7 Amp Heavy Duty Belt Sander with Dust Bag]

BUT I was probably a little too rough on this sander while sanding my 25' x 16' deck. About 1/2 way into sanding my deck (about 1.5 hours) the sander started smoking up a bit. About 15 minutes later total failure.
For the price it is a good unit - depending on what your needs are; however, the unit is entirely comprised of plastic. It will overheat if you are doing anything vigorous. But you can't beat the price.
I bought a MasterCraft sander to finish the deck and it lasted about 45 minutes (same thing happened as this Wen). Luckily I took it back (in the same day) and got a new one to FINALLY finish sanding my deck. And I will be honest, the 3rd sander on this deck started to overheat and smoke up on my last board.
The morale of the story is, save your $$$ for composite decking.
And this is a good unit - but you get what you pay for.
The only reason i gave it lower rating is because of the poorly designed vacuum hose position and connector size. Two shop vacs, neither can be connected. Even with the adapter.
