Top customer reviews
I should note that in a distant place at a distant time during student days I bought a few other Wen tools - with consistent disappointment. They were awful tools 40 years ago. This is a different generation of Wen, apparently, as it meets minimal quality and safety expectations. I have no idea why this is, but if you, like me, were disappointed by the Wen of old, it's worth giving them another try if this sander is any indication. The sander comes with 80 grit sleeves which are too coarse for finish work, so I also got Steelex 150 and 240 grit sleeves. For my application, the 240 was overkill as the oscillation is not that aggressive. I would recommend that you try a 120 or 150 grit for finish work and see if it will work for you, before investing in finer sleeves.
Perhaps the best part of this sander is the dust collection. I hook it up to a standard Shop Vac or my Festool CT26 and very little dust escapes, most especially with the smaller spindles where there is more surface area on the plastic rings for dust evacuation holes. (note: if you use the small Shop Vac or Festool 27mm hoses, you'll need something like a Fein Step Adapter to fit the port). I was very pleasantly surprised. There is on board storage for the various rubber spindle sizes and the orange spindle inserts as the photo shows. Unfortunately, there is no on board storage for the miscellaneous washers that you need for the different spindles- though there is a slot for the wrench as was pointed out to me in an attached comment. It would have been trivial to mold in a plastic tray or two into the side of the plastic cover, but for this price you're not looking for design nuance.
Word to the wise: the cast iron surface ships with PRC gunk on it that should be removed before use and then covered with a protective film that will prevent rusting. Although many recommend using Acetone to clean off the gunk, I use Simple Green to remove, and then cover with 2 thin layers of Johnson's paste wax. It's less caustic and prevents rust on all of my cast iron shop tools. I should also mention that this tool is irritatingly loud, so hearing protection is a must. Like the other PRC tools I've owned, it also smelled up my workshop for quite awhile.
This is an entirely adequate tool for my limited application - just what I was looking for. I don't expect it to have a long life, but if it dies prematurely I'll update this review. My impression after initial use is very positive. It would be unreasonable to expect much more for $100.
note on 3/4" sleeves: Almost all of my work is with the 3/4" spindle so I go through a disproportionately large number of these sleeves vs. other sizes. As a result, combo packs of sleeves are wasteful in my case. I've found that the DELTA 31-792 3/4-Inch 80 Grit Sanding Sleeves for 31-780 Spindle Sander (6-Pack) fits the billl - all i get are 3/4" sleeves and they're a reasonable price on Amazon.
1 year update: I've used this a few hours/per month for 15 months and it's still going strong. I stand by everything I said above.
In operation, the oscillating action is smooth and the table is flat and square to the shaft. Dust collection works great. Some have commented that the dust port doesn't fit their hose end. For them I would recommend the unsung hero of dust collection connections: The adjustable rubber pipe connector. They come in many sizes and the stainless band clamps on each end enable you to tweak the final inside diameter to obtain a perfect fit. Here is the one I used to obtain a well sealed, solid connection to my Festool 27mm hose end: Fernco P1056-125 1-1/4-Inch Stock Coupling These are also readily available in any big box home improvement center. Just get one end 1-1/4 and the other end the appropriate size to provide a secure friction fit on you hose. The 1-1/4 end slides over the outside of the plastic sander dust port with minimal gap and tightening the band clamp makes it a semi permanent part of your sander.
I have some very good quality tools and this sander is a very good addition. The direct drive motor is strong. And you shouldn't bog down on a piece of wood anyway, unless you're trying to burn it. It's light so it's easy to put out of the way. The throats plates are thick and durable, not flimsy like most others. This sander will make it easier to build furniture by allowing me to sand out curves in designs. I originally wanted the Rigid spindle/ belt sander, but I decided I could do without the extra bulk of that one and I could save a hundred bucks to boot. Glad I chose this one. I took a chance on this because I've never heard of this brand before, and after seeing and using it, I'll consider them in future purchases.
