Kitties do not like as much as now-discontinued Max Cat

I don't know why Nutro discontinued the Max Cat line, but I tried this as a substitute. Unfortunately, the pieces are a different shape than Max Cat dry food, and my cats do not like it nearly as much. Max Cat had a thin, round, cat face-shaped piece that my cats liked to crunch. This Wholesome Essentials has a thicker piece, shaped like a large orzo pasta. I still have a little Max Cat left and when I have mixed it in with Wholesome Essentials, my cats will eat around the pieces of Wholesome Essentials and leave it in the bowl. But they will gobble up the thinner Max Cat. My guess is that Max Cat has a more satisfying crunch. But I don't pretend to be able to read a cat's mind!

Update: I had to discontinue feeding this to my ferals, who always adored Max Cat. After switching to wholesome Essentials, something in it made one of the ferals -- who won't let me near him -- scratch himself constantly and so badly that his whole neck was raw. I had to switch to Iams. Very disappointed Max Cat was discontinued. I would have fed that to them forever. Luckily, the little guy with the scratched neck recovered. Also, I noticed that the price was hiked quite a bit for the new food. Max Cat came in 16 pound bags that were cheaper than the 14 pound bags of Wholesome Essentials.

Poopies Don’t Stink!

Theo is a very picky kitty and when I first adopted him from the shelter, I initially kept him on the same food he was on there. His poopies stunk to high heaven!! I always knew when he’d gone to the litter box because the whole house smelled. Since Theo is so picky, (he won’t even take treats) I had to try a couple of different brands before I settled on Nutro. He LOVES his cat food now and the best part is that it doesn’t seem to upset his tummy because his poopies no longer stink. He’s now been on the Nutro for almost 2 years and his coat is so soft and healthy, and he no longer has tummy issues. He’s happy and healthy and continues to love his Nutro.

Cat's wouldn't eat food from this bag, have eaten for years.

I have 4 cats that have been on this food for several years. For some reason they would not eat food from the current bag. I left the food out for 24 hours and they wouldn't touch it. Not sure if there is something wrong with this particular bag or if the recipe has been changed. I wrote to Nutro but have not heard back yet. Wanted to post this in case anyone else has this issue. I did run out and purchase another bag and the cats ate it. Something wrong with this particular bag.

i was concerned cats would not eat replacement i chose for the discontinued max cat in similar salmon flavor. thus far (first bag) cats seem to tolerate the substitution. four year old female has begun to regurgitate more times per month than she did on original max cat. don't know if that is a reaction to this food, aging, or something else.

update: research via pet food review sites --where manufacturer is not paying for the blurb or allowed to otherwise influence content-- i learned that nutro pet food rated poorly. highest mark was grade "c". i taught college level human nutrition for 35 years. my cats nutritional needs are given as much attention as my family. grade "c" is not good enough.

I raised three Siberian Huskies from puppies through adults (2 males & 1 female, 16+ years) on Nutro and they were free-fed. They never over ate, coat was excellent, skin & eyes were excellent, very healthy dogs all they're life. Small amount of firm stool and the food was easily digestible. All three were inside dogs, very quite and well behaved.

Have a cat now, inside cat, approximately 1 year old. I was feeding her another brand of Salmon and Brown Rice type food with no problems. Decided to go back and try Nutro Salmon and Brown Rice and the cat will now not eat the other brand. Same results and health as with the dogs - and the cat is free-fed - only eats about 3/4 cup a day. Food bowl is full all the time. Nutro is very nutritious food and everything the manufacturer claims is true. A tad more expensive than than other cat food but with the excellent health it brings you save big time in the long run.

More expensive than discontinued Max Cat

I was worried my cat would not like this after using Nutro Max Cat Adult for years, but there was no issue. The food is no longer in little cat shapes, but that was more for me - the cat doesn't care. The zip lock closure is nice too.

My main issue is that it's much more expensive than the Nutro Max Cat I've been using for years. I would pay anywhere from $12-$15 for a 14lb bag of food and get it delivered every few months. The Max Cat was a great value that I couldn't beat in any other store or with any other brand. Nutro Wholesome Essentials is $15 for a 6lb bag! That's going from paying a little over $1 per lb to $2.50 per lb! I wonder why the price increased.

I've found that if I feed them Nutro I'm actually reducing their food costs (it costs more per pound, but because it's high quality they eat less; their coats look splendid and they have lost excess fat). This also does not give them flatulence, which some other high-protein foods did. I'm fostering 4 feral kittens and they will even sneak downstairs and eat this in preference to their special kitten kibble!

I used to Feed another top brand cat food My cat ate it and in great shape. When I switched them over to Nutro they flipped over it. They ate like it's a treat! Was running low and bought their old brand. The bowl Sat untouched 3 days. Mind you they ate canned food but when I tried to get them to it it my one cat picked up a few pieces then spit it on the floor like it was a jalapeno. Lol When the Nutro came in it's auto ship but I had all three sitting in front of me like It was Christmas. We will never switch again. Black, white and grey shiny coats, bright eyes, no hairball or urinary issues. Our barn cats and ferals loved the food they would not eat. I only wish we could afford to Feed all our rescues Nutro but we have a farm with over 100 animals so we do best we can. Thanks Nutro great food.
