Editorial Reviews

Review

"Every school library should have this book!" - Kate Feutz, middle school teacher

"A beautiful and touching story through the eyes of a ten-year-old. Entertaining and engaging, it's a great read for all ages." - Cathy Adams, author The Self-Aware Parent

From the Author

This first installment of THE WIG books was written in secret (during my kids' naps, at 5am or at midnight, and in our minivan).
The following books were easier to write because I didn't have to scurry around and hide.

Hope you enjoy this series and remember to keep READING!

The Wig fits in one of the hardest categories to write well: the troublesome tween years when kids don't want to be children any more but very surely don't want to be adults either. Since I have children in this age group I have read a generous sampling of such books. In addition I hear reports that this friend read "the fault in our stars" or that friend read "the hunger games" at the genteel age of 9.

I think many children have an obsession with becoming somewhat older, with a big emphasis on the "somewhat". And sometimes they bite off more than they can chew in the literary department. The Wig somehow manages to be more mature while keeping everything right where it should be for this age group. Brawo!

In the book "the Wig" author Renata Suerth manages to mix several mature and entertaining elements into the plot with good results.

One item particularly well crafted by Suerth: Sofia's introduction into "puppy love". Suerth manages this difficult landscape without making it too cloying or inappropriate. This is coupled with some humorous "embarrassing moments". These embarrassing moments are a great plot device employed by Suerth, in our own household we receive a couple of girls magazines and the "embarrassing moments" section is always the part that is read first. So I know that my girls will enjoy those parts.

This puppy love subplot happens while we weave through Sofia's main internal conflict: dealing with change. Sofia's feelings regarding change serve as the undercurrent of all of her mishaps and encounters. The book ends on a high note, with Sofia realizing that her feelings toward her Grandmother have taken a complete "about face", showing that Sofia (and perhaps the reader as well) can adapt, change, and grow.

What a remarkable, hilarious, ultimately heart tugging story. Sofia is a very precocious 10 year old, she will have you laughing with her thoughts and crazy antics. I read this story to my seven year old daughter and we both laughed out loud. Even
though it's meant for a younger audience, I found myself thoroughly enjoying it. Way to go Mrs. Suerth, I hope you'll continue to write. Your humor is greatly needed in the world.

I wasn't thinking this story would be much, and even as I read I waited for something more. However, by the end (as unexpectedly as the protagonist's epiphany) I realized I laughed out loud, and really enjoyed this story.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The Wig is funny and heartwarming; definitely a good book to read. I laughed so hard when Sofia ran in her underwear (in front of the boy she was trying to impress). Really great job Mrs. Suerth. I hope the story continues in another book so we can find out what else goes on in Sofia's life. I would highly recommend this to everyone.

An absolutely delightful and charming book written for young readers but can be enjoyed by anyone. I instantly fell in love with Sofie, a ten-year-old girl whose entire world is turned topsy-turvy when her family moves in with a distant, quirky grandmother following a profound financial hardship due to the economic collapse.

Sofie tells all as only a child can; learning of the dreaded move and then getting settled into her new home - as readers, we share her consternation and her fears. It is touching and easy for most anyone to relate to the young girl's uncertainty and stress.

It certainly turns into a crazy summer for Sofie as she and her grandmother get to know and love each other, in spite of several very unfortunate set-backs. I know my nine-year-old granddaughter will enjoy reading this book just as I did.

Written in a upbeat, humorous style it was easy for me to get caught up in the drama as Sofie recounts her experiences. However, this is not written in a dumbed-down manner for young readers; rather it speaks creatively and sensibly to all ages. I loved it!

This book was gifted to me by the author in return for my honest review.

If you miss more "wholesome" books from the '80s, then you should definitely get this (and read it!) with your child. It has that special innocent-like humor which isn't always easy to find in the 7-10 age range. Sophie is a spunky gal with a quirky family. But I guess we all have our quirks! Great, great read. Sure to make you moms laugh too! Highly recommend.

This book was so fun right from the start! As a mom, I enjoyed Sophie's adventures. It was fun to hear about her hanging out with her two grandmas who couldn't be more different from each other, but you couldn't help but love both for who they were. It reminded me of how things sometimes appear from a nine year old perspective, or in my case my 10 and 8 year old girls perspective. I smiled and laughed throughout.

My daughters read it and really liked it as well! They felt it was easy to read. They have a grandma from the Chicago suburbs right by us and one from Wisconsin too, which made it extra cool to read about. They can't wait for us to get books 2, 3, and hopefully more.

My family highly recommends this for young and old, and especially to be read out loud together.
