Frugal Film Maker is what linked me to it for a DIY project, and what I imagine most people buying it are using it for.
Cute, but you can't write on it with chalk at all.
If you need a quick and cheap working clapper board for a video project, you'll need to print out a graphic of a real white dry erase type clapper board from the web, and apply the print out to the toy, and then put a clear plastic film or clear tape over it to make it a working clapper board. I did this with mine while I was waiting for a real clapper board to show up a week later. The toy worked just fine for my production durring the wait.
Okay, is it a slate? Yes. Does it clack? Yes. So it is functional. It is a cheap chalkboard, which is functional if you take extremely good care of it. It makes a great wall decoration for a kid's room, or useful for a cheap slate for location filming. If you are shooting digital (camera on your phone) and syncing sound you are recording separately this is a must have. It does not come with chalk or a rag (in case you were wondering). It is of relatively sound construction and I have had no problems with it. It is the only slat I could find easily that was not either digital (expensive and requiring batteries) or a whiteboard. This is a repro of a throwback slate. It works, it is cute, and it is slightly larger than an adult male hand. Other than that it is not something we EVER used on set.
The seller is awesome however!

Perfect size for a child but I was disappointed with the quality. It feels like something I might get at the dollar store. I just expected it to be more substantial and sturdy. Read morePublished 7 months ago by Felice
My daughter loves this. The only thing is the screw top is not tight and falls out. It's an easy fix as long as you can find it.Published 8 months ago by Kim K
Not what I expected. This is a TOY - too tiny to use as a prop.Published 14 months ago by dramaprof
As others have noted, it's rather small, but sufficient for what it needs to do. The surface coating is /not/ a chalkboard, but we laminated it with clear plastic over a white page... Read morePublished 14 months ago by BRP
